Still smiling about the Milwaukee premiere of Allowed to Birth.

A beautiful night celebrating birth autonomy, birth rights, and the people who keep showing up to fight for them. It was especially wonderful to finally meet so many midwives I’ve known through screens, names, and conversations in real life, and to spend time together before and after the film.

There was a gorgeous reception, a powerful screening, a great talkback, and approximately one million hugs and conversations that I wish could have lasted longer.

A huge thank-you to Jacinta and Kristine for all their hard work and for hosting such a beautiful event. Your care, generosity, and dedication made the evening so special.

And then there was Drago the pug, who was clearly the true star of the evening and frankly deserves his own documentary.

I’m so grateful I got to be part of this film and even more grateful for the community surrounding it.

Chicago, you’re next. Allowed to Birth screens September 15 at FACETS in Chicago. I hope to see a whole lot of you there.

So grateful to have been part of this year’s Latch & Stroll as a community sponsor, supporting the Chicago Southside Birth Center and the work being done to expand birth options and access to care.

And the best part of the day? Running into some former clients and getting to catch up. Those full circle moments never get old.

Postpartum mood disorders are in the news again, and while I hope that leads to meaningful conversations, I have also been struck by how much misinformation and outright lack of understanding is still floating around.

Honestly, it’s embarrassing.

Even many of the people presented as “experts” seem unclear on some of the most basic realities of postpartum. How long is postpartum? How long can someone remain vulnerable to postpartum mood and anxiety disorders? What does postpartum support actually need to look like?

The answers matter.

Postpartum is not six weeks. It is not over when someone is medically cleared for s*x or exercise. And the vulnerability to postpartum mood disorders does not disappear because a baby is no longer considered a newborn.

If anything comes from this moment being in the public conversation again, I hope it is a deeper understanding of just how serious postpartum mental health is and how desperately families need real, sustained support.
And while we’re at it, can we please talk about bounce-back culture?

The expectation that a person should recover from pregnancy, birth, enormous hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the complete transformation of their daily life while simultaneously looking like none of it happened is toxic. It is not harmless. And for many people, it makes an already vulnerable time even harder.

We do not need more pressure on postpartum people to “get back to normal.”

We need to recognize that postpartum is a profound transition, support people through it for as long as they need us, and take their mental health seriously.

If you or someone you love is struggling during the postpartum season, please reach out. You were never meant to navigate this alone, and we would be honored to connect you with trusted resources and referrals for the support you deserve.

Anybody who has worked with me knows that magnesium glycinate is my ride-or-die.

Magnesium wears a lot of hats, but glycinate is the one I recommend most often. It’s gentle on the stomach, absorbs beautifully, and I hear from so many of you how much it’s helped with sleep, tension, anxiety, and those pesky pregnancy leg cramps.
Save this guide for the next time you’re standing in the supplement aisle wondering which bottle to grab. And as always, talk to your care provider before starting any new supplement, especially during pregnancy.

The artwork? Museum-worthy.

I was lucky enough to welcome this sweet little guy into the world, and now to get baby snuggles with this gloriously chunky little dude, all while his incredibly talented big sister keeps me supplied with priceless pink masterpieces.

Getting to care for siblings, cousins, and entire growing families is one of the greatest gifts of being a midwife. My heart is so full.

Pregnancy already asks the body to work harder. Extreme heat and poor air quality can add extra strain, making it more difficult to stay hydrated, regulate body temperature, and breathe comfortably.

On hot or smoky days, check the temperature and Air Quality Index before spending extended time outdoors. Drink water regularly, rest in a cool indoor space, keep windows closed when outdoor air is unhealthy, and use air conditioning or a HEPA air purifier when available. If you must go outside during wildfire smoke, a well-fitting N95 or KN95 offers better protection than a cloth or surgical mask.

Pay attention to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness, headache, trouble breathing, confusion, or feeling unusually overheated. Seek medical guidance promptly when something does not feel right.

Protecting yourself from heat and unhealthy air is part of caring for your pregnancy, not an overreaction.
