June is a reminder that healthcare, dignity, and community connection matter for everyone.

Alliance is proud to partner with Positive Resource Connection, a Fort Wayne organization that began in 1985 during the height of the AIDS crisis. At a time when stigma, fear, and misinformation left many individuals and families without support, local community members came together to provide education, advocacy, and compassionate care for those impacted.

What started as a small grassroots volunteer effort grew into one of northeast Indiana’s longstanding public health organizations, expanding services over the years to include prevention education, HIV and Hepatitis C testing, care coordination, housing support, and connection to healthcare resources across the region.

For decades, Positive Resource Connection has worked to reduce stigma and improve access to care through community outreach, education, and support services rooted in dignity and respect for all people.

We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with organizations dedicated to improving the health of the communities we serve through inclusion, education, and human connection.

Fort Wayne Urban League CEO Aisha R. Arrington, M.S. and Alliance Health Centers CEO Dr. Nikki King recently visited the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago ahead of its June 2026 opening.

The visit highlighted the power of leadership, civic engagement, and community investment—values that continue to guide both organizations’ work in Fort Wayne. Dr. King, a member of the Obama Foundation Leaders USA 2024–2025 cohort, was honored to experience the Center before its opening.

As the Fort Wayne Urban League and Alliance Health Centers expand their partnership, they remain committed to increasing access to healthcare and strengthening community well-being. That commitment will be reflected in the upcoming Alliance - Urban League Clinic, bringing integrated healthcare services to the southeast side of Fort Wayne.

Together, we are investing in healthier communities, greater opportunity, and a stronger future for those we serve.

Hot weather + high blood pressure is not a good combo. ☀️🫀

As it starts warming up outside, dehydration and extreme heat can put extra stress on your heart and blood vessels — especially if you already have hypertension.

A few reminders for the summer:
- Drink your water before you feel dehydrated
- Don’t sit in the heat too long
- Keep up with your meds
- Go easy on the salty snacks
- Check your blood pressure regularly
- Listen to your body if you feel dizzy, tired, or overheated

The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is also a great way to support heart health by focusing on foods rich in potassium, fiber, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables while reducing excess sodium intake. Small changes can make a big difference over time.

High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” for a reason. A lot of people don’t realize they have it until symptoms become serious. Prevention and routine care matter.

📍 Proudly serving the community with convenient locations in Auburn, Fort Wayne, and Marion.

"My hands began to sweat, and I attempted to hold back tears — 25 years as a social worker and delivering bad news still isn’t easy."

The news our Chief Behavioral Health Officer, Kris Wise, had to deliver was that his client would be spending another freezing night sleeping in her car before heading to her two part-time jobs.

In a deeply moving op-ed published in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Kris reflects on this interaction and draws a powerful parallel to Fort Wayne's history. In 1982, when devastating floods hit, 10,000 teenagers rallied to sandbag the city. We became known as “The City That Saved Itself.”

Kris challenges us with a vital question:
If we could come together without judgment to save our neighbors then, what happened to us? Where are our values now?

At Alliance Health Centers, we see every day that behind these community discussions are human beings who deserve safety, respect, and care.

Thank you, Kris, for reminding us of who we are, who we have been, and who we can choose to be again.

Before Alliance Health Centers operated out of this building, Lafayette Medical Center was founded by Dr. Alfred Stovall and Dr. Jeffrey Towles in 1993.

Both men dedicated their lives to serving communities that had historically been overlooked by healthcare systems and invested their work back into Fort Wayne’s south side.

Dr. Alfred Stovall was born in Birmingham, Alabama and moved to Fort Wayne at seven years old. Raised on the south side, he attended Purdue University, Fisk University, and Howard University College of Medicine before serving in MASH units during the Vietnam War.

After returning home, he opened a family practice on Fort Wayne’s south side, where he spent decades caring for generations of families. Patients knew him as a physician who treated people regardless of what they could afford. Some paid with food from their gardens or meals cooked at home. Dr. Stovall later founded the Fort Wayne Black Medical-Dental Association and served on the board of the Fort Wayne Urban League.

Dr. Jeffrey Towles spent nearly 40 years serving Fort Wayne as a surgeon, advocate, and community leader. In 1980, he led the surgical team that saved civil rights leader Vernon Jordan after an assassination attempt. He also served on the Fort Wayne Community Schools Board during desegregation efforts and later became board president. Towles Intermediate School was later named in his honor.

Together, Dr. Stovall and Dr. Towles built Lafayette Medical Center at Lafayette & Pontiac so Black physicians could better serve patients in their own community.

Today, Alliance Health Centers continues serving the community inside that same building while also operating within the Fort Wayne Urban League .

Friday Reality Check 🫶🏽

“I keep telling myself I just need to push through, but I’m tired all the time and everything feels hard lately.”

We’ve been hearing versions of this a lot lately.

A lot of people are carrying more than anyone realizes right now. Rising costs, long work hours, caregiving, stress, poor sleep, chronic health issues, burnout, anxiety… eventually the pressure of “keeping up” catches up to the body and brain.

This Memorial Day weekend, we hope you take a moment to rest too. Not because everything is magically handled, but because you deserve care before reaching complete exhaustion.

Rest is preventative care. 💚
