IU Department of Occupational Therapy

Indiana University's Occupational Therapy Program offers the best of new and old. In fact, in the 2018 U.S. This is the highest ranked OT program in Indiana.

Established in 1958, the IU program is the longest continually accredited Occupational Therapy program in Indiana. Our history of graduating talented practitioners makes us well known in the Occupational Therapy community locally, regionally, and nationally. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools Ranking of OT programs in the country, the IU School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences Occupational Therapy program was ranked 25th.

Introducing Virginia Autumn Curtis - Class of 2028 - With a special shout out as it was her 23rd Birthday last week!
Getting to know Autumn:
📍 From Westfield, IN
📚 Studied Exercise Science at the University of Southern Indiana
👩‍⚕️ When asking Autumn what her favorite aspect of being in the program was she said…“I love how much I have grown throughout this program. I have gained so many hands on skills through competencies and labs, but also gained a greater understanding of what OT truly is and how occupation brings meaning and purpose to our everyday lives :)
✨ Autumn is interested in the OT Specialty: Pediatrics or Hand Therapy!
👕 Favorite Occupation: Thrifting & Traveling
❤️ When asked a moment she felt drawn to OT she said: “I shadowed at a few OT clinics while in undergrad which showed me how vast OT’s scope really is. I loved how no patient or condition was ever the same and there are so many different settings and populations we work with and so many realms of health we are just beginning to branch into.
🌍 Fun fact about Autumn is that… “I have been to more countries than I have US states!”

Dr. Leah Van Antwerp has started a collaboration with Mount Sinai and the Guyana Ministry of Health to increase workforce capacity in Guyana by providing education to rehabilitation professionals.

In July she spent a week in Georgetown providing a training alongside Behavior Therapist, Laurel Stewart, on Autism and Sensory Processing.

Dr. Van Antwerp also had time to visit the National Park, where she was able to feed and pet manatees :)

📖 Attended Indiana University Bloomington and studied Psychology with a Sociology Minor
👯‍♀️ Favorite Occupation: Social participation! Spending time with the people I love ❤
💖 She described a special thing about the program has been… “IU OT has given me opportunities that I am so grateful for, and friendships that will last a lifetime. I think this programs positive atmosphere allows us to be ourselves and makes learning so much more fun!

Wishing Liv Braida - Class of 2028 - A Very Happy 23rd Birthday Today!
Getting to know Liv:
📍 From Greenwood, IN
📚 Studied Exercise Science and minored in Psychology at IU Indy!
👩‍⚕️ When asking Liv why she chose OT she said… “I chose OT because I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare, and I loved the uniqueness and diversity of the profession! The populations and settings that we can work in is endless!
🧩 A moment in which Liv has felt drawn or connected to OT was… “when I interned in the Eskenazi burn unit during my undergrad. I was able to see patients progress from inpatient to outpatient, and it was inspiring to see the hard work dedication that they had!
💖 She also described her favorite aspect of being in the program: “A special aspect about IU OT that I have enjoyed is the community that is built among not only the students but also the staff!”
✨ Liv is interested in the OT Specialties: Oncology, Neuro, or Burn!
🥾 Favorite Occupation: Anything outside! Whether it’s hiking, having a lake day, or traveling!
🎥 Fun fact about Liv is that she can quote The Grinch movie almost word-for-word

Introducing Halle Knies - Class of 2029!
📍From Jasper, IN
📚 Studied Kinesiology at IU Bloomington
🎵 Favorite Occupation: “Walking, yoga, and listening to music 🧘🏼‍♀️🎧”.
👩‍⚕️ When asked why she chose OT Halle said: “Teaching swim lessons and coaching youth sports for so many years showed me how rewarding it is to help kids build confidence and reach their goals, which is what inspired me to pursue occupational therapy. I have a big heart for helping people, and OT felt like the perfect way to combine my compassion with making a real difference!”.
✨ Halle is interested in the OT specialty: Pediatrics
🥋 Fun fact about Halle: “I have my orange belt in Hapkido!”

Our second year students were each able to take over and teach their class about any topic. This was done in their OT as a Health and Academic Educator class. The presentations utilized different teaching methods to see which method was the best. Here is a snapshot of some of the presentations!

Our second years had the opportunity to work with the nutrition and dietetics program to learn about the pillar of nutrition in lifestyle medicine! This was a hands on experience where they got to cook a healthy meal together!
