The Bardo is taking an important step in expanding the ways we support people at the end of life.

This week, our staff will learn from three extraordinary leaders in end-of-life care — Trish Rux, Nina Guertin, and Wendy Longacre Brown — as we deepen our understanding of Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED).

VSED is a legal, voluntary end-of-life choice in which a person stops eating and drinking as a means of hastening death. Supporting someone through VSED requires thoughtful preparation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a deep commitment to compassionate, person-centered care.

This training is an important step in The Bardo’s journey toward becoming a VSED-supportive home. Through education, policy development, and ongoing collaboration with hospice partners, we are expanding our capacity to honor autonomy while providing holistic support to guests and those who love them.

We’re deeply grateful to Trish Rux, Nina Guertin, and Wendy Longacre Brown for sharing their knowledge, experience, and wisdom with our team.

We look forward to sharing more as this work continues.

Summer Solstice Staff highlight! 💐👑🌻

Meet Ann Olson! The Bardo is so lucky to have Ann as one of our incredible bedside caregivers (and one of our FOUR death doulas on staff)!! Ann coined the phrase “The Bardo Secret Sauce” when talking about the team and Ann is a key ingredient.

Ann received a psychology degree from Drake University and went on to study occupational therapy at St. Catherine University. She worked as an occupational therapist for over 20 years, specializing in the treatment of neurological conditions such as stroke and dementia.

Following her rehabilitation career, Ann worked as a dementia consultant for over 100 assisted living and memory care communities, concentrating on improving the experience of residents. She founded Sweet Basil Senior Care LLC in 2022 to directly address the needs of clients living with dementia and their families.

Over the years, Ann noticed that companionship and kindness were often the most therapeutic aspects of the treatment she provided.

Ann is an integral part of our Secret Sauce. ✨ Thank you for all you do.

The wonderful Sandy Agustin led us in a nature mandala-making workshop, also known as Morning Altars. This was followed by our monthly Music & Memorial gathering, where we come together to speak the names of those who have died, share memories, and offer music and poetry in remembrance.
