DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE ~ “You Can Go Deeper. I Have a High Pain Tolerance.”

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that sentence… 😂

One of the most common misconceptions about Deep Tissue Massage is that deep tissue = hard pressure. It doesn’t. Can deep tissue work involve firm pressure? Absolutely. Sometimes firmer pressure is appropriate and necessary. But applying as much force as someone can tolerate, isn’t automatically therapeutic. Your pain tolerance isn’t what determines how much pressure your tissues need.

Deep Tissue Massage is about accessing deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue effectively, not seeing how hard I can push.

When I begin with lighter to moderate pressure, there’s a reason for it.

Before I start trying to address deeper muscular restrictions, I need to work through the more superficial tissues and fascia. Slow, deliberate techniques can help decrease guarding, improve tissue mobility, and allow me to gradually access deeper structures without simply forcing my way through resistant tissue.

And that matters because when your nervous system perceives pressure as threatening or painful, your body may respond by guarding. Which is essentially tightening against what I’m trying to accomplish.

At that point, harder isn’t necessarily deeper.

Sometimes it’s just harder. 😏

Once the superficial tissues begin to soften and I can feel the tissue yielding beneath my hands, then I can progressively work into deeper muscular layers, address areas of restriction, and incorporate more focused techniques where appropriate.

That’s also why Deep Tissue Massage doesn’t have to hurt to be effective.

You may feel significant pressure. You may experience that familiar “good hurt” sensation in an area that needs attention. And yes, there are times when I may use substantial pressure.

But pain is NOT the measurement of a successful massage.

My goal as an LMT isn’t to prove that I can overpower your pain tolerance. 😂 My goal is to assess what I’m feeling beneath my hands and use the appropriate pressure, pace, and technique for what your tissues are actually doing.

So when you tell me:
“You can go deeper. I have a high pain tolerance.” I believe you. 😂

But give me a minute. I’m working my way there.

Deep tissue isn’t about forcing your body to surrender. It’s about getting the tissues to let me in. And THAT’S where the magic happens! 🙏🏼 💗

What most people call a “knot” is almost certainly a trigger point, & a trigger point is not a physical tangle of tissue. It is a neurological event.

Every muscle fiber is controlled by a nerve. Where that nerve meets the muscle fiber is called the motor endplate. When everything is working normally, the nerve fires, the muscle contracts then releases. But sometimes the motor endplate gets stuck in the ON position, so it keeps releasing acetylcholine, the chemical signal that tells the muscle to contract.

The sarcomeres (the tiny contractile units inside the muscle fiber that actually do the shortening) cannot complete their cycle. So they stay locked. Sustained contraction compresses local blood vessels, cutting off the ATP supply the sarcomeres need to release. No ATP means the actin and myosin filaments cannot detach from each other. They stay stuck.

Imagine a fist. A clenched fist is not a structural deformity. You cannot fix it by forcing the fingers open. You fix it by giving the nervous system a reason to let go.

So the trigger point is not a knot. It is the neurological consequence of sarcomeres that cannot let go. Which means you cannot mechanically break it up, because there is nothing structurally broken to break.

We are talking to the nervous system. Through gate control, through descending modulation, through conditioned pain modulation & more.

Actual fascial adhesions & scar tissue? yes, structure matters there BUT even those mechanisms are not what most therapists think. For fascial adhesions, sustained mechanical load signals fibroblasts to remodel collagen over time, a process called mechanotransduction. For scar tissue, techniques like cross friction create a controlled stimulus that encourages collagen to reorient along lines of tension. BOTH are slow & cumulative. Not a one-session fix.

A total of $62398.55 was raised for Dysautonomia International at this year’s Race to Beat POTS 5K!! What an amazing event!!

This event all started when two mother/daughter duos met at a Dysautonomia International conference 11 years ago (both daughters are POTS patients). They were the only ones in the line for being interested in holding a fundraising event/5k.

This year, the group of us participating “POTSies” was small, but the amount of family/friend/community supporters that showed up was quite impressive!!
