Summer: Are you eating for the heat?

I work with so many women who want to improve their hot flashes. We often link hot flashes to menopause symptoms.

Did you know it can also be caused by eating/drinking too many hot foods: spicy foods, caffeine, chocolate, nightshades like tomatoes, alcohol, chai and kombucha can all be too much heat in your body.

Balancing foods include: cucumbers, coconut, aloe, berries, jicama and carrots.

Bone Density needs a specific type of exercise. 💪

Our pools are open now, and swimming is peaceful and easy on the joints, if that's what you're looking for in exercise. 🏊

However, as a personal trainer I have to let you know that swimming is not the best if you're working for bone density because of the lack of weight bearing.

You should make sure you are working with weights 3x a week.

Marianne’s Case Study, Female ⤵️

Chief Complaints: Healing a foot/ankle injury which was a combination of plantar fasciitis and a torn calf muscle.

Determined Imbalances: She was already in PT, but wanted more work to strengthen her legs for hiking and walking.

Protocol Completed: Analyzed her weekly workout and added some targeted exercises for calves and hips.

Outcome: After one month of performing these exercises 3x weekly she was 100% better and was waking up without daily pain. She is now in maintenance and will see me only once every 3 months.

Have you seen this new TikTok trend, “Are you a Chinese Baddie?”

Well, we love it here at Eat Sleep Play Meditate! The fact that Traditional Chinese Medicine is becoming hot again, greatly aligns with Ayurveda traditions.

One important thing to remember, however, is the advice TikTok influencer, Sherry, gives about drinking hot water for digestion. While this habit is great for some, it’s not a good idea for others.

Here’s what you have to remember. Every body type has different needs. Depending on what type you are, these needs vary.

In Ayurvedic medicine, there are three primary ayurvedic body types or ‘Doshas’:
Vata - which is primarily cold
Pitta - which is primarily hot
Kapha - which is primarily heavy

If you are Pitta, drinking hot water can be detrimental, not helpful. Especially if you are a menopausal woman who is experiencing hot flashes. Consider that it’s not only hormones that contribute to hot flashes, but it can be what you are eating and drinking, as well!

Are salads really a “Health Food”? 🥗

The answer is, yes and no.  

While salads are packed with nutrients, eating them exclusively can be a bad idea. When salads are eaten raw, it takes a very strong digestive system to properly break it down. Unfortunately, not many of us possess this. Therefore, our bodies try to cook the raw vegetables internally.  This can cause digestive distress, reduce mineral absorption and limit your intake of certain nutrients and antioxidants.

Cooking vegetables breaks down complex plant cell walls, making trapped nutrients much easier for our bodies to absorb.

So, if you are experiencing constipation and bloating, try cooking your veggies and eat LESS raw vegetables, like salads! 🫶🏼

Sam’s Case Study, Male Age 60 ⤵️

Chief Complaints: Sleep disruption caused by nighttime heat. Seeking overall health evaluation. Health conscious and looking for improved sustained wellness.

Determined Imbalances: We isolated sleep disruption and nighttime heat due to overusing caffeine. He was sleeping with the window open and his partner was complaining about being cold! After establishing his body type, it became very apparent that he was overusing caffeine - without knowing it, he was consuming 400 mg caffeine daily with a mixture of coffee, energy drinks and supplements.

Protocol Completed: Caffeine reduction - over the course of a month he completely cut out caffeine.

Outcome: His sleep was 100% changed for the better! The heat was gone and sleep was peaceful again.

⭐ Caffeine is very heating. Different Doshas process it differently. If you run ‘hot’ or experience hot flashes often, it may be as simple as what you put in your body (food/drink) causing you issues.
