Stand on one leg for 10 seconds. That little test may say something real about how long you live. 👆 Swipe.
In 2022, researchers followed 1,702 adults aged 51 to 75 for 7 years. At the start, everyone took the test: barefoot, one leg, arms at sides, three tries.
One in five couldn't do it. Over the next 7 years, 17.5% of them died — versus 4.6% of those who passed. Adjusted for age, s*x, weight, conditions: 84% higher risk of death.
And it climbs hard with age: ~5% fail at 51–55, 18% at 61–65, over half by 71–75.
Honest framing: observational — association, not proof. Balance is strength, coordination, inner ear, and reaction time at once — a frailty meter. But it's trainable: a test you can fail is a test you can practice.
Try it near a counter: one leg, 10 seconds, three tries.
