Heuser Hearing Institute

Heuser Hearing Institute Giving those in our community the experience of sound and language since 1948. We have come a long way from serving three children in a basement in 1948.

In 1948, The Louisville Deaf Oral School began through the joint sponsorship of the Woman’s Club of Louisville and the Kiwanis Club. From our humble beginnings with three children in a basement room at the Woman’s Club, the need for such a place has always been apparent and the school has grown rapidly in both numbers and quality. We were the first school of our kind in Kentucky and continue to be

one of a limited number in the United States. Over the years, the need to provide early intervention, preschool and kindergarten services to children who are deaf and hard of hearing has grown. In fact, in 2001, because of the great need, Louisville Deaf Oral School moved to a new 35,000 square foot campus on Kentucky Street. To continue to serve our children with hearing loss after they graduated, Heuser Hearing Institute was established. Heuser Hearing Institute is committed to cutting edge technology, research and instruction. We provide internships and educational opportunities in ear related medicine, speech-language pathology and audiology. Not only are children served at the Institute, but people with hearing loss of all ages. In 2008, Louisville Deaf Oral School changed its name to Heuser Hearing & Language Academy. Now, Heuser Hearing Institute consists of Heuser Hearing & Language Academy, Heuser Hearing Services Center, and Heuser Research Center. Now, we are available to assist everyone who has hearing loss! Can’t hear? Come here!

Thank you to all of our patients, visitors, and families for your patience as we begin renovations to our Old Louisville clinic! Your support has resulted in a successful transition as we temporarily move providers to our other Louisville locations, and we are excited to get to work. 🔨💚

While many of our providers are temporarily relocating, Dr. Edwards and Dr. Talmadge will still be seeing patients at an alternate office space on our Old Louisville campus. If you have an upcoming appointment scheduled at our Old Louisville clinic, your drive may be impacted by the I-65 closure. Please review your route in advance, and allow enough time to safely arrive to your appointment.

If you have any questions about your upcoming visit please call our office at (502) 584-3573

Did you know that audiology started as a profession to help veterans with hearing loss after they returned home?

That being said, it should come as no surprise that hearing issues are the most common disability among American veterans. Thankfully, audiology and tech in the industry continue to evolve at a rapid pace to help many of those with a variety of individual needs.
