🩷🌿 Some of our favorite visitors to our mangrove restoration site are the beautiful roseate spoonbills.

With their bright pink feathers and distinctive spoon-shaped bills, roseate spoonbills are among the most recognizable coastal birds in the Americas.

But their unique bill isn't just for looks.

As they wade through shallow water, spoonbills sweep their bills side to side, detecting small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects by touch. Healthy wetlands and mangrove ecosystems provide the calm, nutrient-rich feeding grounds they depend on to thrive.

That's why habitat restoration matters.

Mangroves support entire food webs — creating safe places for fish, birds, turtles, and countless other species to feed, shelter, and reproduce.

Today, they still cover roughly **50% of Florida**, but the story underneath that number is far more fragile.

Only an estimated **3–5% of mature longleaf pine ecosystems** remain intact.

That means one of the most ecologically important forest systems in the Southeast has been reduced to a fraction of what it once was.

The longleaf pine ecosystem is more than trees — it’s a fire-adapted habitat that supports hundreds of species, from gopher tortoises to endangered grasses and ground-nesting birds.

Without periodic fire and restoration, these systems collapse into lower-biodiversity scrub and fragmented forest.
