About the Advocacy Network with Disabilities

THE ADVOCACY NETWORK ON DISABILITIES champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. Long before “collaboration” and “partnering” were buzz words, these principles were the foundation upon which The Advocacy Network on Disabilities was founded. Since its beginnings as a subcommittee of South Florida's Health Planning Council in the early 1970s, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has been a coalition of individuals with disabilities; family members; advocates; community service providers; and other public, private and governmental organizations. With an original focus on individuals with developmental disabilities, today the organization also provides supports and services to individuals with physical, sensory and other disabilities. Our mission is simple: “In partnership with people with disabilities and their families, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities advocates, coordinates and provides supports and services.”

Through facilitating community collaboration, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting acceptance, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities goals include:

1) Helping individuals identify and access supports and services;

2) Bringing unmet needs to the attention of decision-makers and advocating for change;

3) Providing expertise about best practices and specialized resources; and

4) Conducting outreach, education, and professional development activities. The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has a proven track record of excellence. Since 1975, its funders have continuously found the organization in compliance with both programmatic and administrative contract requirements. Consumer Satisfaction Surveys indicate that 96% of respondents are satisfied with the help they receive from us.

🎃🏀 Trunk or Treat at Casa Familia was a slam dunk!

Thank you to Casa Familia for hosting such a fun, welcoming night. Our team showed up in full Miami Heat spirit, complete with a hoop, pennants and plenty of candy.

We loved seeing all the costumes: Spider-Man, Jessie, Eeyore, Tinker Bell, a hot dog (!) and so many more. Most of all, we loved seeing families, friends and neighbors of all abilities celebrating together.

This is what belonging looks like. Happy Halloween, Miami! 🧡

☕💜 We spent yesterday morning in Miami Beach getting ready for !

Our team joined nonprofits from across Miami at the Give Miami Day Coffee + Coaching Boost Session, put on by with Radical Partners. We worked through rotations with coaches on impact storytelling, donor engagement and campaign strategy, and got to brainstorm with peers who are just as excited for 11.19 as we are.

We left with new ideas and a clear plan for this year’s campaign. Our goal is $30,000 to keep building a Miami where every person with a disability is included. Every gift helps make that happen.

Today is Day Twenty-Four of 31, and we celebrate Advocacy Network on Disabilities! 💙

Advocacy Network on Disabilities empowers individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to live meaningful, self-directed lives in their communities.

Through advocacy, information and referral, case management, family support, education, and community collaboration, they help children, adults, seniors, caregivers, and families access services, protect their rights, and achieve greater independence and inclusion.

My Birthday Project is proud to recognize their impact with a $100 donation from Jose Fernandez and The ONE Team at Keller Williams.

Behind every number is a child, a family and a success story. 💚

Since 2002, The Children’s Trust has turned local property tax dollars into lasting impact for Miami-Dade:

📚 5.6 million books given to children since 2004
👶 20,367 children under 5 received developmental screenings and early intervention services in 2024–25
🏫 66,871 students served through school health clinics in 2024–25
💪 98% of early intervention summer camp participants kept or improved their developmental progress

The Trust spends 90.8% of its budget on programs and services, and its funding priorities are set by an independent, 33-member volunteer board.

Building inclusive workplaces builds stronger communities. 💚

This morning, our President and CEO, Lianie Cuba, and members of our staff attended the Employment Pathways Collab at the Coral Gables Public Safety Building.

The room was full of businesses, HR professionals and community partners, all focused on one goal: opening more doors to meaningful employment for autistic adults and people with disabilities across South Florida. We had great conversations with employers and fellow organizations, and we left inspired by how many people are ready to make their workplaces more inclusive.

Thank you to Summer of Success and all the participating organizations for bringing us together. We're proud to be part of this work and look forward to the partnerships ahead!

Local property taxes. Local children. Local impact. 💚

For nearly 25 years, The Children’s Trust has used voter-approved property tax dollars to support children and families across Miami-Dade. It costs the average homeowner less than $7 a month.

That money funds programs at more than 2,000 sites countywide, including:
✅ Early child care and early intervention
✅ After-school and summer programs
✅ School health services
✅ Parenting and family supports

It started in 2002 as a promise to children of all abilities. In 2024–25, The Trust put $52.4 million toward therapies and support services for children with disabilities.

🗳️ Amendment 3 is on the November 3 ballot. If it passes, The Trust projects it would lose $18.7 million in its first year and $33.5 million a year after that. Programs like early intervention, child care, school health and family crisis support could be affected.

Today is Disability Mentoring Day! 🌟

A good mentor can open doors. They share what a job is really like, help you build skills, and believe in what you can do.

Disability Mentoring Day connects students and job seekers with disabilities to mentors, job shadowing, and real career experience. It’s part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “Celebrating Value and Talent.”

Disabled workers bring talent and fresh ideas to every workplace. Mentoring helps make sure that talent gets seen.

Not every disability can be seen. 💙💚

This is Invisible Disabilities Week. Many people live with disabilities you can’t see, like chronic pain, fatigue, brain injuries, learning disabilities, mental health conditions, or hearing and vision loss.

“But you look fine” can hurt. Someone’s needs are real even when you can’t see them.

How you can help this week:
✔️ Believe people when they tell you what they need
✔️ Don’t ask someone to prove their disability
✔️ Offer flexibility at work, at school, and in the community
✔️ Remember that a disability can look different from day to day

A white cane is a tool for independence. It helps blind and low-vision people travel safely and confidently.
