About the Advocacy Network with Disabilities

THE ADVOCACY NETWORK ON DISABILITIES champions the rights of individuals with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities by promoting inclusion, providing services, and advancing systems change. Long before “collaboration” and “partnering” were buzz words, these principles were the foundation upon which The Advocacy Network on Disabilities was

founded. Since its beginnings as a subcommittee of South Florida's Health Planning Council in the early 1970s, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has been a coalition of individuals with disabilities; family members; advocates; community service providers; and other public, private and governmental organizations. With an original focus on individuals with developmental disabilities, today the organization also provides supports and services to individuals with physical, sensory and other disabilities. Our mission is simple: “In partnership with people with disabilities and their families, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities advocates, coordinates and provides supports and services.”

Through facilitating community collaboration, fostering self-advocacy, and promoting acceptance, The Advocacy Network on Disabilities goals include:

1) Helping individuals identify and access supports and services;

2) Bringing unmet needs to the attention of decision-makers and advocating for change;

3) Providing expertise about best practices and specialized resources; and

4) Conducting outreach, education, and professional development activities. The Advocacy Network on Disabilities has a proven track record of excellence. Since 1975, its funders have continuously found the organization in compliance with both programmatic and administrative contract requirements. Consumer Satisfaction Surveys indicate that 96% of respondents are satisfied with the help they receive from us.

Families come in many forms, and fatherhood is about more than biology. It’s about showing up, offering support, sharing wisdom, providing encouragement, and helping others grow.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom, equity, and belonging are ongoing commitments.

As we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, we also recognize that many people continue to face barriers to full participation in their communities. Black people with disabilities often experience the intersecting impacts of racism and ableism, highlighting the importance of building a society that is accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all.

Today, we honor the resilience, leadership, and contributions of Black disabled advocates who have helped advance civil rights, disability rights, and social justice. Their work reminds us that true inclusion means ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Together, we can continue creating communities where every person is valued, supported, and empowered to belong.

So many members of the LGBTQAI+ community are also disabled, neurodivergent, chronically ill, or living with nonapparent disabilities. Their experiences remind us that liberation must be inclusive, accessible, and rooted in care. Pride isn’t just about visibility — it’s about actively dismantling barriers, whether they’re physical, social, or systemic.
Disability justice teaches us that everyone deserves dignity, autonomy, and access — values that are essential to LGBTQAI+ liberation too. When we center the most marginalized voices, we create stronger, more compassionate communities for all.
This Pride, let’s commit to:

🇺🇸❤️ This Memorial Day, Advocacy Network on Disabilities honors and remembers those whose lives were lost in service to our country.

We also recognize that holiday weekends can bring changes in routine, crowded spaces, loud environments, and emotional overwhelm for many individuals with disabilities and their families.

There is no one “right” way to observe the day.

For some, connection looks like gathering with loved ones. For others, it may mean spending quiet time at home, taking sensory breaks, or simply creating a calm and supportive environment. 🫶

Wherever and however you spend the day, we wish your family peace, comfort, and meaningful moments together. 💙💚
