Our members are powerful. They train their bodies to live well.
This is one of our members, Brenda, warming up for one of the 18 holes she completed at last year's annual Swing for a Cause Golf Tournament. This year's tournament is only a few short weeks away, and we are looking forward to seeing all of our powerful members and their communities coming together to champion the course. As we say, Think Strong, Move Strong, Be Strong, and we can Beat PD Today!

Our Swing for a Cause Golf Tournament is right around the corner and we are so grateful that this annual celebration is returning for its 6th year! We couldn't make this tournament happen without the support of our community, and the generous donations that help us bring accessible and Parkinson's-specific exercise classes to those who need them. We currently have an extremely generous donor who is willing to gift match any donations we receive in support of our 6th Annual Golf Tournament! We have less then one month to go -- let's make it count!

Congratulations to our dedicated members who joined us in class 12+ times over the last month! 💪 We've seen these members show up over and over again for themselves. It's not selfish, it's scientific. Exercising at a moderate to vigorous intensity for at least 30 minutes, 3 days/week, is what will make changes in your body and your brain, especially as a person with Parkinson's. There is power in exercise. Join a class today (your first one is FREE) and get started on your journey to be one of our Movement MVPs.

Let us introduce you to another one of our amazing Beat PD Today Trainers, Tricia. 💪💙

Tricia instructs our Monday evening online classes, and she is known for her infectious positivity.

A fun fact about Tricia is that she has also been a School Teacher for 25 years! She loves any and all kinds of teaching and helping people of all ages learn, grow, and reach their full potential.

We love having Tricia on our team, and we know you will love taking her class!

Town Fair Tire Foundation, Inc. is the Presenting Sponsor for our 6th Annual Swing for a Cause Tournament, and we couldn't be more grateful. This organization is making a difference throughout New England, supporting individuals, families, and communities. As a nonprofit themselves, they understand the importance of support, and they use their resources to give back to others.

When Beat Parkinson's Today receives the generous support of donors like TFTF, we use it to create events in our communities like our free Educational Symposium, to establish more accessible locations in new communities, to train more instructors, and to continue developing our program and our reach in the Parkinson's community. Thank you again to Town Fair Tire Foundation for being our Presenting Sponsor this year! We look forward to seeing everyone on the golf course!

We have exciting news! Beat PD Today is going to have a NEW class in East Hartford starting September 15th! We are offering an Advanced level class that will meet at 9:30am in H.E.R Fitness Studios. We are looking forward to having a space to challenge our members who are looking for that additional push. Living well with Parkinson's is possible, and we are here to help you every step of the way.

We are also offering an Online class, Balance and Strength, every Sunday morning as a weekly reset. Stretch, lengthen, strengthen, and balance. This is the perfect complement to the high intensity work done in classes throughout the week. You will feel less tense and more prepared to take on the upcoming week after taking this class.

Jumping is a skill we might not consider important as we age -- what purpose does it have in our day to day life? However, it's extremely important! And it's the power that drives a jump that we really care about! Power is one of the first things we start to lose, which means that our movements are slower overall. Sometimes a slow gait might be because of Parkinson's, but sometimes it's because we need to start training our bodies to move quickly and with more power again. We can make those changes!

In our exercise classes, we build up to our power exercises. We might start with swiftly raising onto our toes and controlling ourselves back down. Then we might add small hops while holding onto a chair. As we progress, such as in the video here, we might hop in different directions, and even ultimately hop on one foot. There are so many variations, and they're all incredibly important if done safely and progressed slowly.

Member spotlight Monday✨ This is our committed member, Bert. We see him multiple days a week at our online classes -- he was chosen for the spotlight because every class he shows up and gives it his all! 💪 For Bert, movement has always been a part of his life. Read his story below to see how even with the challenges that Parkinson's brings, he is able to keep prioritizing moving well and living well.

"I am 77 years old now. When I was younger I hiked the Appalachian Trail from Maine to New York, climbed many mountains, was a member of New York’s Road Runners Club, cycled, and boated, spent hours in my wood shop, worked long hours as a lawyer, and provided well for my family.

Parkinson’s Disease by comparison is my big challenge versus the active life I once took for granted. I see neurologists, take medicine, and have physical therapy. Beat Parkinson’s Today is a key commitment to me to maintain as much strength and movement as possible. I look forward three days a week to having a great workout with terrific instructors and the other folks exercising together with us.
My heartfelt thank you to the Beat PD team!"

We are so lucky to have you as part of our community!💛
