I went to college to study forestry. My dream was to become a forest ranger and work at Yellowstone National Park. I have always loved studying the earth and have felt a deep connection to the natural world. I love Science and I love learning about how the earth itself was formed. Some of the geological formations found at National Parks connect us to a time when human beings didn’t even exist. Our planet is a time capsule for evolution and we barely appreciate it.
I struggled during my first year of college. I was struggling to maintain a GPA that would continue to keep me qualified for the small scholarship I received to go to school. My brain does not do Math. I thought maybe it was my inability to focus. Even after trying ADHD meds to see if that would help me learn better in Math, I still failed.
Eventually, I dropped out of the Environmental Studies program. I went to my guidance counselor, feeling defeated. He switched me to an American Studies major because at the time, Anthropology was not an option at my school. I began taking Philosophy classes, I studied religion, culture and art. I was taking creative writing classes and history. I left college with a 3.0 GPA. Perfectly average.
I travelled after college and got my first job in a school system when I was 24 years old.
I was often assigned to students who could not communicate verbally or had very limited communication skills. I was able to work with them because non-verbal communication is something that I excel at. I simply learned their form of communication rather than force them to conform to mine.
I have never felt like I fit in anywhere in this world and it has taken me a long time to be ok with it. During my healing sessions I am able to read energy and emotions and this allows me to have a deeper understanding of my clients and of the human condition. I didn’t follow this path to be trendy. I followed this path because it is something that evolves with me. Healing is something we do because we feel a call to come back to ourselves. So my advice is: follow your path, even when it doesn’t seem clear. Empowerment arrives when we understand our true nature and accept it.
