September 6–12 is Vascular Nurses Week—a time to recognize the exceptional nurses who play such an important role in caring for patients with vascular conditions.

At the Vein Institute of NJ, our nurses bring clinical expertise, compassion and reassurance to every stage of the patient experience. They educate patients, assist with procedures, coordinate care, answer questions and provide the thoughtful support that helps patients feel informed and confident throughout their treatment.

What happens during a vein ablation?

Vein ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to close an unhealthy vein that may be contributing to varicose veins, swelling, aching, heaviness or other symptoms of venous insufficiency.

Using ultrasound guidance, a vascular specialist places a thin catheter into the affected vein. The vein is then closed using heat or, in certain procedures, a medical adhesive. Blood naturally redirects through healthier veins, while the treated vein is gradually absorbed by the body.

The procedure is typically performed in the office, and patients can walk immediately afterward with limited downtime.

Varicose Veins vs. DVT: Understanding the Important Differences

Varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can both affect the legs, but they are very different conditions.

🟣 Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins located near the skin’s surface. They are often visible and may cause aching, heaviness, mild cramping, itching, skin darkening near the ankle, or mild swelling, especially after standing for long periods.

Common risk factors include pregnancy, age, family history, obesity, and prolonged standing. Vascular physicians typically evaluate varicose veins with an examination and venous duplex or reflux study. Treatment may include compression, leg elevation, exercise, or a vein procedure when needed.

🔵 DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the calf, thigh, or pelvis. It generally cannot be seen from the outside. Possible signs include sudden swelling in one leg, calf pain or tenderness, tightness, warmth, redness, or a change in skin color.

Risk factors can include prolonged travel or bed rest, surgery, cancer, pregnancy, hormones, and clotting disorders. Because a clot can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism, suspected DVT requires urgent medical evaluation, which may include a Doppler ultrasound, D-dimer test, or other testing.

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Irma Moreira 🌟

Meet Irma, a Medical Assistant and Scrub Technician in our Clifton office who will celebrate nine years with the Vein Institute of NJ this November!

Irma began her career with us at the front desk and has continued to grow into new roles over the years. Before joining our team, she gained experience in several medical specialties, including chiropractic care, ophthalmology, and bariatric surgery.

For Irma, the most rewarding part of her work is seeing the positive impact that compassionate care can have on patients—from helping ease their anxiety before a procedure to seeing them return feeling healthier and more comfortable.

“What I enjoy most is knowing that the work we do improves our patients’ quality of life. I also appreciate learning new skills and working alongside such an experienced and dedicated team.”

Irma describes the Vein Institute in three words: compassion, teamwork, and dedication. Outside of work, she loves spending time with family and friends, trying new restaurants, and enjoying the outdoors when the weather permits.
