Somebody has watched you stand up out of your chair and you saw their face change. 🦓

Ambulatory wheelchair user is the actual term, it has been the actual term for a long time, and using a wheelchair some days and walking on others is not a contradiction. It is the entire point of the chair.

Here is what they think they saw. They think they caught you.

Here is what actually happened. 👀 You have a limited supply of standing, and you spend it on purpose. The chair is not a statement that your legs do not work. The chair is what keeps the working legs available for the moment that needs them, the stairs when the lift is broken, the walk in from the parking lot, the last hour of the day when everybody else still has something left.

Same with a cane. Same with a rollator. Same with the days you use one and the days you do not.

I am a PT. Almost thirty years, specializing in hypermobility, EDS, POTS, MCAS and ME/CFS, and I live in a body that does all of this. So here is the clinical part, said plainly. Using an aid on a day you could technically have walked is not cheating. It is pacing. It is the strategy. It is the reason there is a Thursday. 💜

You do not owe anybody a demonstration. Nobody earns a mobility aid by being unable to move, and no one gets to audit your Tuesday.

Your hip and your SI joints are screaming by the time you get there, and the drive home is worse. 🦓

Hip/pelvic support while driving is one of the things you have asked me for the most, so here is the tool I actually use.

A Nylatex wrap. 👀 It is the reusable elasticized wrap physical therapists have in every clinic, it comes in a few widths and lengths, and the long wide one goes around your pelvis.

That is the whole tip. Wrap it around your pelvis, your hips, or both, snug enough to feel like support, and drive.

Compression there gives the joint something to work against instead of nothing, and it costs about as much as a sandwich. 💜

Snug, not cranked. You should be able to slide a flat hand under it easily, and if anything goes numb or tingly it is too tight.

Right now, sitting where you are, press both hands firmly in on the sides of your pelvis and hold for a few seconds. 👀 Notice whether anything lets go.

Chores with POTS 🦓 The dishes take eleven minutes and the recovery takes an hour, and that ratio is the actual problem.

Here’s why standing still is harder on you than walking is. When you walk, your calf muscles squeeze the veins in your legs and push blood back toward your heart. When you stand at a counter without moving, that pump switches off, blood settles low, and your heart speeds up trying to cover the difference. It was never the chore. It was the minutes spent upright and still, which is why “just be faster” has never once worked for anybody.

So here’s the tool, and it is the same tool four times. A stool at the dryer. A stool at the sink. A stool at the stove. A stool in the bathroom. Do you see a pattern with stools? 👀

Bring the task down to you instead of holding yourself up to reach it. Sitting is not the lazy version of the chore. Sitting is what makes the chore cost eleven minutes instead of an hour.

One note, because it matters: stable base, feet supported, nothing on wheels and nothing you have to perch on.

Cooking with POTS and hypermoblity gets a lot cheaper once the kitchen stops being a standing event. 💜🦓💜

Replying to Em because I have options for the stairs. 💜🦓💜

Yes I kicked it. I kick it every time. The bag has never once complained…and it’s hella therapeutic. 😎

Here’s the part nobody says out loud: the handrail is not decorative. Gripping it and pulling means your arms take a share of the lift, and squeezing your hands is literally one of the counter-pressure maneuvers you get taught for not passing out. So when you carry a basket out in front of you with both arms, you did not just add weight. You fired the only two employees who were helping.
🤚🤛 Squeeze your hand right now. Feel your whole arm switch on? 👀 That.

Hence: 🎒 laundry backpack. Both hands free, both hands on the rails, arms back on your payroll.

🦶And yes, that is me picking things up with my toes so I don’t have to bed over and make my POTS mad. I have the skillz. You may also develop the skillz. It is cheaper than a reacher and significantly more smug.

Real talk though. I eventually moved the laundry to the same floor as my bedroom and stopped doing the stairs with laundry at all. That is not cheating, it is the highest tier of the entire list, and nobody teaches it because not doing the thing feels illegal. 💜🦓💜

👍 Yes, these are my pajama pants. I wore them to work on purpose.

Clothing is sensory input, and sensory input costs energy. 🪫 If your nervous system is already running on empty from pain, POTS crash, MCAS flare, or just being a sensory-sensitive person in a loud world, a waistband that digs in all day is not a small thing. It is one more signal your brain has to filter while it is also trying to keep you upright and functional.

So take the cheap win. Wear the soft pants. Nobody is grading you, and you can spend that capacity on something you actually care about.

Syncope (or passing out) in POTS is a blood volume and autonomic regulation problem. Nobody is choosing it, and no amount of trying harder will change it.

📣 Driving Tips for Hypermobility...Episode 2, Part 2 (make sure you go back and watch part 1) 👍
One of the hardest things about driving when you’re a Zebra 🦓 is neck pain, fatigue, headaches, and more! Our necks do a lot of work when we are driving: not only are they constantly trying to orient our head and
eyes 👀 inside a hollow tube barreling down the freeway at 75 mph and bumpy backroads where the potholes jump out to get you...we are also asking them to constantly look around and scan our environment for obstacles and landmarks so we know where we are going (most of the time). If that all wasn’t hard enough, add (sometimes maybe) a little ditticulty with attention 🫣 , a symphony of other sensory nightmares
(we’re talking about you, horn-honkers) and a seat that wasn’t really designed to be comfortable for anyone (except Preston, and we’re all jealous of and dislike you, Preston, with your weirdly tall but compact body that somehow fits that headrest )....well, it’s fair to say our necks don’t stand a chance.

What they need is a little support to reduce the number of times you need to ask your neck to work like an owl. 🦉 That’s where today’s tip comes into play! (...don’t bring Preston, he’ll just be annoying about it.)
