A flashlight is one of our favorite tricks to get a child engaged—turn off the lights and everything is more fun!

You can hide objects in plain sight, tape pictures around the room and work on describing, compare and contrast, or articulation sounds, you can make shadow puppets and tell stories, you can play flashlight tag and catch the light, the options are endless!

One of our favorite ways to teach the k and g sounds is to grab our doctor kit along with some tongue depressors and lollipops, and get deep into a play schema.

Lay down on the floor—it’s time for your doctor’s visit!

Pretend play can take the pressure off of learning a new sound or doing it right on the first try. Pretending to be a doctor can help kids feel more comfortable, both with the tongue depressor and with tactile cueing from the therapist.

Sneak Peek into a literacy session with Angelique! ✨

Children are far more engaged when learning feels meaningful and playful.

In this activity, the “password” to cross the bridge had to be tapped out sound-by-sound. What looked like imaginative play was actually targeted literacy practice embedded naturally into the story line.

Instead of drilling the skill in isolation, we gave it a purpose:
�🔐 tap the sounds → say the password → save the animals!

The longer children are engaged in play, the more opportunities to model and practice the targeted literacy skill. 🤍

Being a strong speech therapist is more than just knowing the research...yes, that’s an important part of it, but we believe connection is what truly makes a difference.
Connecting looks like taking the child’s special interest and turning it into therapy.
Pokemon cards? No problem.
An interest in peacocks? We can work with that!

Did you know you can read a whole book without actually...reading the words?

There are so many ways to make story time interactive. Here are some of our go to tricks:

- Talk to the characters in the story (pretend like you are in the book)

- Model, model, model (provide simple comments connected to the story and avoid questions that add any pressure for the child to respond). But don’t worry, if you’re engaged and talking to the characters- children will want to join in for the fun!

- Make comments repetitive so your child can pick up the pattern (i.e. where are you walrus? come back here!)

- Get silly! Our favorite way? pretend the characters are not listening and being mischievous or goofy.
