Taking care of yourself may not be on your practice’s business plan—but perhaps it should be.

Physicians, practice owners, administrators, and healthcare leaders spend their days taking care of patients, supporting their teams, solving problems, managing schedules, and trying to grow the business. In the process, it’s easy to put themselves last.

But your energy affects more than how you feel. It can influence your creativity, leadership, communication, problem-solving, and the quality of the decisions you make.

In this episode of Bariatric Business Accelerator, Karol Clark explores why taking care of yourself isn’t separate from taking care of your practice—it can be an important part of leading it well.

You’ll learn:
• Why your energy should be viewed as a business asset
• How exhaustion and constant reacting can affect leadership and decision-making
• Why creating “white space” can help you identify problems and opportunities more clearly
• How your own habits set an example for your team
• Why this is especially relevant for professionals working in weight management, bariatrics, obesity medicine, and lifestyle medicine
• Three simple ways to begin protecting your energy without adding another complicated task to your schedule

Sometimes what looks like a staffing problem, productivity problem, or business problem looks very different when you have the space and energy to evaluate it clearly.

And as healthcare professionals, we routinely encourage patients to prioritize movement, sleep, stress management, nutrition, and their overall health. We don’t have to be perfect—but there is value in recognizing that those same priorities matter for us, too.

Your action step this week is simple:
Put one non-negotiable appointment with yourself on your calendar—and protect it.

Because taking care of yourself isn’t necessarily time away from your business. It may help you show up with more energy, better ideas, clearer decisions, and stronger leadership.

You hired a team to create more capacity in your weight loss or bariatric practice—so why are you still answering every question, catching every problem, and managing every detail?

If everything still runs through you, the problem may no longer be hiring. It may be how you're leading.
In Part 3 of my three-part Before You Hire series, we're talking about what happens after you put the right people in place: how to build a team that takes ownership, performs consistently, and moves the practice forward without you becoming the bottleneck.

For many physician practice owners, leadership wasn't something they were formally taught. They became managers by default. That can lead to one of two extremes—hovering over every detail or stepping back without giving the team enough structure to succeed.

Neither creates the independent, accountable team you need to grow.

In this episode, you'll learn:
Why hiring more people doesn't automatically reduce your workload
How to shift from managing every detail to actually leading
Why many performance problems are really expectation problems
How to create specific, measurable expectations your team can follow
When to coach, correct, or let someone go
How to stop unintentionally creating team dependency
Why patient experience should be at the center of your practice culture
How what you recognize—and what you tolerate—shapes the team you ultimately build

The goal isn't to remove yourself from your practice. It's to build a team with enough clarity, accountability, and ownership that they don't need you to make every decision.

Because a practice that depends on you for everything will always be limited by your time.

🎙️ This episode concludes the three-part Before You Hire series:
Part 1: Is It Time to Add Staff—or Fix Your Systems?
Part 2: Patient Care Coordinator: Are They the Right Fit for Your Practice?
Part 3: You Hired a Team—So Why Are You Still the Bottleneck?

If you're making a hiring decision, struggling with team performance, or realizing that your practice still depends too heavily on you, my VIP Business Building Blueprint can help you identify the systems, roles, and priorities that need attention. Watch now: https://youtu.be/xQK-sYpph5U

Is the next “big opportunity” actually right for your weight loss practice? 🤔

New service opportunities are everywhere—peptide therapy, longevity, hormone therapy, aesthetics, genetic testing, GLP-1 programs, and more.

And while expanding your revenue streams can be a smart growth strategy, more services don't automatically mean more profit.

Before you invest your money, your team's time, and your marketing resources, ask these 4 questions:

🔹 Is there real patient demand—or are you chasing a trend?
🔹 Will it actually be profitable?
🔹 Can you test it before going all in?
🔹 Will it strengthen your practice—or distract from your core business?

One of the biggest mistakes I see practice owners make is looking at a new service and asking, “How much revenue could this generate?”

A better question is:

“What would have to happen operationally and financially for this to actually be profitable?”

Because sometimes the best growth opportunity isn't adding another service.

It's making the services you already offer work better.

Before you say yes to the next exciting opportunity, take a step back and evaluate whether it truly moves your practice forward—or simply gives your team more to do.

Your Patient Care Coordinator may be one of the most important people in your weight loss or bariatric practice. But do you have the right person in the role—and have you set them up to succeed?

In Part 2 of my three-part Before You Hire series, we’re looking at what makes an exceptional Patient Care Coordinator, whether you're hiring someone new or evaluating the person already in the role.
Unlike many traditional support positions, a Patient Care Coordinator isn't simply managing tasks. They’re managing the patient relationship—from that first conversation through consultation, enrollment, follow-up, and the moments when a patient starts to disengage.

And in weight loss care, how those conversations happen matters.

In this episode, you'll learn:
Why the Patient Care Coordinator can have such a significant impact on patient engagement and conversion
How to recognize a capability gap, temperament gap, or role clarity gap
The qualities you simply can't train into this position
What you absolutely can train—even if someone has no bariatric experience
Three scenario-based questions that can help identify the right person
How to evaluate someone who is already in the role
Why a realistic 30-, 60-, and 90-day onboarding plan matters

One of the most important principles I share in this episode is simple: hire or retain for the qualities you can't teach, and train confidently for everything else.

The right Patient Care Coordinator should be warm, emotionally comfortable with patients, persistent without being pushy, and able to take real ownership of the patient journey. Pair those qualities with clearly defined expectations, strong systems, and proper training, and this role can become an important driver of both patient experience and practice growth. 🎙️ Coming next in Part 3: Once you have the right person in the right seat, how do you lead them effectively without becoming the bottleneck? We’ll talk about building a team that performs, takes ownership, and moves the practice forward without you having to be in the middle of everything.
Ready to strengthen your Patient Care Coordinator role or determine whether you have the right person in the seat?
