Happy Father’s Day from The Active You!

Today we’re celebrating all the dads who keep showing up, setting an example, and proving that an active life is about so much more than miles, workouts, or finish lines. It’s about being present for your family, your friends, and your community.

A special shoutout to our own Rob and John, two dads who remind us that staying active isn’t just about fitness. It’s about creating memories, leading by example, and inspiring the next generation to get out there and move.

To all the fathers, grandfathers, stepdads, and father figures: thank you for keeping us moving. Happy Father’s Day!

As always, we wrapped up the episode with a local craft beer, and this week Riley brought us something we don't get to see very often in Western New York!

We cracked open a Fluffy Sunshine from in Pennsylvania. One of our favorite parts of recording The Active You is getting to share a local craft beer and learn a little about where our guests come from. It's even better when it's something that's not easy to find around here.

Have a beer you think we should try on a future episode? Maybe you're a local brewery, home brewer, or just have a favorite craft beer you'd love to recommend. Let us know in the comments! We're always looking for new beers and new stories to share on the show. 🍻

This week, we're joined by RunBird Riley, a longtime Mizuno representative with nearly 16 years in the running industry. From the early days of the Running Shoe Geeks page to helping runners find the right shoe today, Riley shares his perspective on running, shoe technology, and staying active for life.

One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is simple:
The best running shoe is the one that you enjoy running in.

We dive into the evolution of running shoes, the importance of proper shoe fitting, some great shoe geek stories, and what makes a shoe truly work for an individual runner.

Whether you're training for your next race, looking for your next pair of shoes, or just trying to stay active, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

We also get Riley to break down one of the questions we hear all the time at Runner's Roost: What's the best running shoe?

With so many great brands and models to choose from, it can feel overwhelming trying to find the right fit. But as Riley explains, the best running shoe is the one that you enjoy running in.

That idea really highlights why run specialty stores are so important. Whether you're a seasoned runner, training for your first race, or someone who says, "I'm not a runner," the right shoe can make all the difference.

At Runner's Roost, we believe in meeting people where they're at. Our goal is to help you find the shoe that fits your needs, supports your goals, and makes being active a little more enjoyable.

Tune in this Sunday for a great conversation with Riley about running, Mizuno, shoe technology, and living an active life.

We're so excited to have had Riley, AKA RunBird Riley, join us on The Active You! For nearly 16 years he's been our go-to Mizuno guy, and it was awesome to finally sit down and talk all things running, shoes, technology, and what it means to stay active for life.

One of the coolest moments? Riley rolled in wearing the original Mizuno Wave Rider 1, a shoe many consider one of the OG plated daily trainers. It's crazy to think how far running shoes have come since then. Now we're talking about the Wave Rider 30!

We also got to share the story of how John and Riley first connected years ago through the Running Shoe Geeks page before eventually meeting in person at Runner's Roost. What started as comments on a running shoe forum turned into a friendship built around a shared passion for running.

Tune in this Sunday for Episode 11 of The Active You. If you love running, shoe history, and hearing from one of the most knowledgeable people in the industry, this one's for you.

Episode 10 is out now!

We sat down with Luke Rogers to talk about his journey from basketball to running, starting from scratch, coaching at Runner’s Roost, training John, and what it really takes to keep showing up. From not being able to run 100 meters to running a 2:39 marathon, Luke’s story is a reminder that consistency, patience, and hard work can take you a long way.

Luke talks about his first run and how he couldn’t even make it 100 meters. Fast forward to now, and he’s running a 2:39 marathon.

That kind of progress does not happen overnight. It takes dedication, consistency, patience, recovery, and a whole lot of showing up when it’s hard. You do not have to start off “good” to become great. You just have to start and keep going.
