This Sunday, Nov 1, the clocks fall back and we all get a free hour. My prescription? Spend it asleep. 😴

Sleep is one of the most underrated tools in weight care. When you're short on sleep, your hunger hormone (ghrelin) goes up and your fullness hormone (leptin) goes down. Your brain starts looking for fast energy. That afternoon snack attack after a rough night isn't a lack of willpower. It's biology.

A few ways to make the time change work for you: 🌙 Keep your usual bedtime by your body clock ☀️ Get outside for morning light 📵 Keep screens out of bed ☕ Cut off caffeine after lunch

And if you snore loudly or wake up exhausted no matter how long you sleep, ask about sleep apnea screening. It's common, and treating it can make weight care easier.

Let's take the guilt out of the candy bowl this year. 🎃

One of the most common things I hear around holidays is "I blew it, I'll start over Monday." But one night doesn't undo your progress, and the restart mindset usually makes things harder, not easier.

A few things that actually help:
🍬 Eat a real meal before the festivities. Showing up hungry makes cravings louder.
🍬 Choose the treats you truly love and skip the ones you don't.
🍬 Buy candy you're not tempted by for trick-or-treaters.
🍬 Let your next meal just be your next meal. No compensating, no punishing.

Your plan should work in real life, including the fun parts. That's what personalized care looks like.

Now tell me: what's the one Halloween candy you'll always say yes to? 👇

'Tis the season for office parties, family dinners and a lot of "just one more." 🥂

Before the holidays get busy, here's something most people don't know: the U.S. Surgeon General calls alcohol the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., after to***co and obesity.

Alcohol can also make the holidays harder on your weight goals. It adds calories, lowers your guard at the appetizer table, and disrupts your sleep.

I'm not here to cancel your holiday toast. I'm here so you can choose with your eyes open. My go-to party plan:

✅ Eat before you go
✅ Decide your alcohol intake ahead of time
✅ Alternate every drink with water or sparkling water
✅ Watch the added sugar in drinks and mixers

On a GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medication? Alcohol can make nausea and stomach upset worse, so go slow.

Less is better

About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s why October matters to me, and why I want you to know more than “get your mammogram.” 🎀

6 things every woman should know:

1️⃣ Start at 40. At average risk? Start screening at 40. Ask about yearly vs. every other year, and 3D mammography.
2️⃣ Know if you’re high risk. BRCA, a strong family history, or past chest radiation can mean a yearly MRI too. The American College of Radiology recommends a risk assessment by 25.
3️⃣ Know your density. It’s on your mammogram report. Category C or D? Ask about extra screening.
4️⃣ Know your number. Get your Tyrer-Cuzick (TC) score from a free online calculator or your imaging center. Lifetime risk of 20%+ = high risk.
5️⃣ Know your metabolic health. After menopause, obesity is one of the biggest breast cancer risk factors you can change. Losing even 5% of body weight was linked to lower risk.
6️⃣ Have breast cancer? You don’t always have to stop your GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP medication. Talk with your oncology team and obesity medicine doctor.

Breast cancer has a metabolic side too.

This week is Medical Assistants Recognition Week, and we want to say it loudly: we are so proud of our MAs!

They're the first friendly face you see when you walk in. They take your vitals, run your InBody scan, chase down your labs, and answer the call when you have a question between visits. They remember your kids' names and the win you shared last month.

Our MAs join us while finishing college or during a gap year, on their way to becoming physicians, physician assistants and dietitians. This year, Tulsi and Allen were accepted to medical school, and Malina was accepted to a physician assistant program.

"These are the future faces of health care. I know they'll treat their patients with respect and compassion, and I know they'll make health care better and brighter. I couldn't be prouder of them." — Dr. Nikita Shah, DO, DABOM

Allen, Anjali, Brant, Fiona, Malina and Tulsi (listed alphabetically, because we don't have a favorite), thank you for everything you do. 💛

Patients, if one of our MAs has made your visits easier, tell them in the comments. We'll make sure they see it.

So many of my patients see themselves in at least one of these.

Emotional eating is often about rest, comfort or a moment for yourself, not really about the food. Cookie-cutter advice misses that. A good plan meets your body's needs and gives you new ways to meet your emotional ones.

Which number are you? Tell me in the comments. And if you're ready for help that goes deeper than "just eat less," tap the link in our bio to book your first visit.

Emotional eating isn't a character flaw. It's your brain reaching for the fastest comfort it knows.

HALT is a simple pause that helps you figure out what you really need. Try it the next time you're standing in front of the pantry, and tell me which letter shows up most for you.

If emotional eating has been running the show for a while, you don't have to handle it alone. At Weight Sense, we look at what's driving it and build a plan that treats the root cause. Tap the link in our bio to book a visit.

"Should I get the pill or the shot?" I hear this almost every day now.

The honest answer: it depends on you. Each option has its own pros, cons and side effects. As a board-certified obesity medicine physician, my job is to match the tool to the person, not the other way around.

If you've been wondering which one is right for you, that's exactly what we sort out at your first visit. Tap the link in our bio to book, in person or virtually.
