The Valley Center for Digestive Health is proud to offer a comprehensive Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Program to help patients diagnosed with IBD achieve lasting remission and improved quality of life.

IBD refers to two chronic, autoimmune disorders that result from an abnormal immune system response. These include Crohn’s disease, which can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, and ulcerative colitis, which affects the colon (large intestine). IBD is a systemic condition, and can also affect the joints, skin, eyes, and liver.

“Inflammatory bowel disease can negatively impact patients’ lives, which is why there is a need for proper medical therapy,” said Michael Herman, MD, Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at The Valley Center for Digestive Health. “It is a lifelong condition that requires proactive management and proper medical therapy. It is important to be a part of a program like this to be able to provide the necessary resources for patients to be adequately treated.”

This program is for patients who already have a diagnosis of IBD and are looking for comprehensive IBD medical care. The program focuses on preventing flares and complications, routine surveillance, vaccination and infection prevention, patient education, and long-term care planning.

Through the program, patients will have access to advanced diagnosis and monitoring; state-of-the-art treatment options, including medical therapies and surgical expertise; and nutrition, lifestyle, and integrative care options, such as registered dietitians, integrative therapies, and behavioral health support.

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program also partners with organizations such as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation to provide patients with additional education, support groups, and community resources.

“Our goal is to offer high-level, individualized IBD care that you can get close to home,” said Dr. Herman.

On Friday, June 19, Valley honored and celebrated Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday memorializes June 19, 1865, the day that Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War was over.

To mark the occasion, members of Valley’s Social Equality Council raised the Juneteenth Flag in front of The Valley Hospital.

At Valley, we are committed to fostering an open dialogue, through the efforts of the Social Equality Council and beyond, so we can continue to grow and enhance the way we care for our patients and each other.

For the eleventh consecutive year, The Valley Hospital has received national accolades for its achievements and innovation in healthcare sustainability from Practice Greenhealth.

The Valley Hospital received the Greenhealth Champion Award, which recognizes the organization’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its environmental performance and integrating sustainability into its operations and culture.

Valley also received the Circle of Excellence Award for “greening the operating room.” According to Practice Greenhealth, the Circles of Excellence award honors up to ten of the highest-performing hospitals in categories of environmental performance, including leadership, waste, chemicals, greening the operating room, food, environmentally preferable purchasing, energy, water, climate, and green building.

“Sustainability is an integral aspect of Valley’s commitment to improving health and well-being,” said Robert Brenner, MD, MMM, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Valley Health System. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our operations and create a healthier future for our patients, employees, and the communities we serve.”

The Valley Hospital, located in Paramus, New Jersey, is operated and maintained using environmentally friendly principles, with more than 30% of the hospital campus dedicated to open green space. The hospital has two green roofs, which involve growing plants on the facility rooftops. Green roofs have numerous benefits, including reducing stormwater runoff, improving energy efficiency, and improving the overall look of the hospital for patients and neighbors.

The hospital also features a cogeneration plant, which produces 30-40% of its power, depending on the season. The plant feeds power to a primary switch gear, which powers the building. This produces electrical energy, as well as heat, from the plant that would have otherwise been unused. The plant allows the hospital to produce its own steam, hot water, and air conditioning, while reducing Valley’s carbon footprint.

Valley Health System is proud to offer a short-term peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) treatment for patients experiencing chronic pain whose pain has not resolved using traditional therapies and pain management. Treatment is provided using the Sprint® Peripheral Nerve Stimulation System manufactured by SPR® Pain Relief.

Peripheral nerve stimulation is offered through The Valley Pain Management Center. The center treats an array of conditions, including arthritis, back and neck conditions, muscle and joint pain, post-traumatic injury, recovery from surgery, osteoporosis, sciatica, and pain from work-related injuries.

“This treatment is beneficial for a wide range of pain pathologies,” said Uzma Parvez, MD, Director of the Pain Management Center for Valley Medical Group. “It has been very well-tolerated and has shown long-term benefits to patients.”

“The nerve is essentially rehabilitated as the pain signals are modulated using electrical currents,” said Philip Lin, MD, pain management specialist. “Patients have shown improved quality of life after the implant has been removed.”

Other treatment modalities, including pain management therapies and medication, will be recommended before a patient may be eligible for PNS. To learn if PNS is right for your pain, please speak with your pain management team.
