There's now an international standard for menopause at work.

ISO 45010 was published September 7. It's the first international standard on menstruation and menopause in the workplace, it's free to read, and it's voluntary. It covers the basics: temperature and ventilation, water and restroom access, breathable uniforms, flexible hours and breaks, and managers trained to have the conversation.

In the US, a few places are going further. Philadelphia's new workplace protections start January 1, 2027.

A policy helps most when you know what you're dealing with. In a LifeStance Health survey this summer of 1,000 women in perimenopause or menopause, 74% had symptoms for six months or longer before they suspected it. Hard to ask for support for something you haven't named yet.

Many of the women I see were told nothing was wrong before anyone said the word perimenopause.

Slept eight hours and still exhausted. Awake at 2, again at 3:30, again at 4, alarm at 6. Coffee like it's a full-time job.

This is not how your 40s should look.

Underneath a sleep pattern like that can be a dysregulation of several hormones: progesterone, thyroid, cortisol. Sleep is often one of the first things to go.
