Sometimes your shift ends, but the mistake keeps working overtime in your mind.

You replay what happened while driving home, changing clothes, opening the refrigerator and trying to settle into the rest of your life.

Reflection can help you learn. Rumination keeps asking the same painful questions without moving you toward anything useful.

Before judging yourself, rewind to your immediate response:

Did you pause and identify what happened?
Did you speak up and involve the appropriate person?
Did you communicate the facts clearly?
Did you follow the required escalation, reporting and documentation process?

Those actions do not erase what happened or replace any necessary follow-up. They give you a responsible foundation for reflecting on what contributed, what you learned and what needs to change.

A mistake may be part of your experience. It does not have to become your identity.

This is general educational guidance—not individualized clinical advice. Always follow your organization’s policies, chain of command and professional responsibilities.

Without sharing any patient, employer or clinical details: Which is harder for you—responding in the moment or quieting the self-talk afterward?

I thought I was supposed to choose one nursing specialty, master it and build a neat, predictable career from there.

My actual path had other plans. 😅

I learned. I pivoted. I adapted. I grew. I led. And eventually, I became the mentor I once needed.

There were times when changing direction felt like losing progress. I wondered whether starting somewhere new meant everything I had already done no longer counted.

But I was never starting from nothing.

I carried every lesson, difficult shift, new skill, patient interaction and leadership experience forward. Even the parts of my journey that didn’t make sense at the time helped shape how I care, think, communicate and support other nurses today.

Your career doesn’t have to follow a straight line to be meaningful. The path you’re questioning now may be preparing you for something you can’t see yet. 💚

What unexpected turn has shaped your nursing journey?

It’s rainy where I am today, and honestly, days like this are perfect for grabbing a cup of coffee, sitting down and getting organized for the nurse-residency application process ahead. â˜•ïžđŸŒ§ïž

Some health systems begin recruiting new graduates months before graduation—but every employer has its own application window, eligibility requirements and available specialties.

This isn’t about panic-applying. It’s about doing your due diligence now so you have the information, documents and deadlines you need to be prepared when the right opportunity opens.

Take some time to:

‱ Identify the employers you’re considering
‱ Check their official careers pages
‱ Record application dates and requirements
‱ Gather your rĂ©sumĂ©, references and requested documents
‱ Set reminders before each window opens

Rainy day or not, give your future self the gift of being prepared. 💚

When do you graduate—and have you started researching nurse-residency programs yet?

AI can support your nursing judgment—but it cannot build that judgment for you.

A confident answer is not automatically a correct answer. New nurses still need to pause, verify, question and assess the patient in front of them.

Technology can bring information to the conversation. Your nursing judgment still has to stay in the driver’s seat.

Has AI entered your workplace or nursing education yet? What concerns—or possibilities—do you see?

Some nights are for work. Other nights are for Bruno Mars. đŸŽ¶âœš

And what a night it was! Incredible performances by Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak as DJ P*e .Wee, RAYE and Silk Sonic—with special guest Natasha Bedingfield giving us all the 2000s feels.

There will always be another task to finish, another goal to reach and something else demanding your attention. But there is more to life than work.

Make time to create moments for yourself. Have fun. Be fully present. Let yourself enjoy the life you’re working so hard to build. 💚

Confidence isn’t built by pretending you always know what to say. Sometimes, it starts with having the right words available when you need them.

That’s why I created my free Confidence Scripts—to give new nurses practical language for asking questions, speaking up, requesting help and communicating more clearly during real clinical moments.

The scripts won’t replace your judgment or your voice. They’ll help you strengthen both.

Comment SCRIPTS and I’ll send you the free guide. 💚

A hard shift can test you without defining you.

Needing help, asking questions or being corrected doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re learning, practicing your judgment and growing into the nurse you’re becoming.

You don’t have to feel fearless to trust that you belong. Confidence can look like taking the next step, speaking up when something doesn’t feel right and giving yourself room to learn. 💚

What would feel different for your shift if you trusted yourself more?

Stay tuned for the fourth and final part of The Truth About Nursing Confidence series.
