I had the privilege of speaking with Patrick Derksen, a Professor of Experimental and Preclinical Oncology at UMC Utrecht. I was able to ask him questions about his research and its implications for patients. Do you want to know more about this interview? Stay tuned as we continue to share information about ongoing lobular breast cancer research directly from one of the top researchers in the field!

I had the privilege of visiting Patrick Derksen and Jorine at the University of Utrecht Lab, and got to do a deep dive into their ongoing research on Project Pearl. This project started with contributions from Lob the Ball, and there exciting things are happening in the lab! It is because of your support we are able to fund projects such as this.

Making a difference was and continues to be my key motivator behind Lob the Ball. And the EMT’s in West Deer Pennsylvania gave me the ability to continue making a difference after my cardiac arrest. This weekend my family took the time to make gift bags for the EMT’s who responded when my husband called 911. While there is no gift or words that will ever express the extent of our gratitude, we will continue to find ways to give back to them. Thank you to my family for taking the time this weekend to participate in this activity, specifically Liz Bitzer for organizing the whole thing. And as I will continue to say, thank you to all EMTs, especially the ones in West Deer Pennsylvania.

The Note Reads:
To the West deer EMTS and paramedics,
You didn’t just save one life. When Astrid’s heart stopped your skill, courage, and quick action gave her back to us - a wife, sister, aunt, mom, and Oma to five grandchildren (with more on the way!)
But the impact of what you did reaches even further. Astrid is leading a fundraiser and advocating for lobular breast cancer research, dedicating herself to improving the lives of those affected by this often overlooked disease. Because you saved her life, she can continue that work - bringing Hope to patients and families who may never have the chance to know your names.
Yes, you gave Astrid more time With her family, but you also gave her more time to make a difference in the lives of others. No gift or words can fully express what that means to us. Please know that the life you saved will continue to touch countless others, creating an extraordinary ripple effect.

With our deepest gratitude,
Astrid’s Family

Part of my mission with Lob The Ball is to be a patient advocate and help raise awareness through my story.

This past week, I had the honor of participating in a video shoot with Dr. Carolyn Delacruz and the plastic oncology surgery team at UPMC. Thank you to Dr. Delacruz, her office, and the entire UPMC team for the opportunity to share my journey. I’m grateful to be part of something that can help others.

Life has its beautiful ways of coming full circle! Being a stepmom of 5 was not always easy, some days felt impossible. Along the way, I also became a mom to two sons, this was where the magic started. My older kids love and acceptance of their younger brothers really brought our family together. What started as a challenging role has become one of the greatest blessings in my life, and has given me the greatest support system.

Who is your support system?

Hi everyone, It’s Astrid.

I would like to thank you all for your ongoing love and support on this page and for Lob The Ball. Sharing my story and experience, both with cancer and my cardiac arrest has connected me with many of you and has helped grow Lob The Ball to be what it is.

With that being said, as I move through my days and begin to think about what’s next, I see an oppurtunity to show you all another side of my life, the now. The reality is, cancer will never not be apart of my story. But it also does not define me. I am still me. I’m a mother, a sister, an Oma to my amazing grandchildren. My experience with cancer is something I will still share on this page and as always raising funds for lobular cancer research. But I also want to show you all my life now. The things that bring me joy, the pockets of peace I am able to find in the smaller moments. And my hope is, by sharing these with you, another survivor or fighter will see this and resonate with those moments. With the idea that there is more beyond your diagnosis and battle. I am ready to share this part of my life with you, and I hope you will all join me in this new endeavor.

With Love,
Aussie
