National Preparedness Month is the perfect time to remind our community that the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is continuously preparing for potential hazards.

Recently, ACHD hosted a measles tabletop, which gathered more than 100 local stakeholders including county representatives, healthcare providers, school nurses, EMS, nonprofits, and other community groups to ensure we are prepared for an outbreak as measles cases rise across the state.

These tabletop exercises are just one of several proactive steps we are taking to protect the health and well-being of the 1.2 million Allegheny County residents.

🦟 The Allegheny County Health Department will be treating portions of Aspinwall, Troy Hill, Reserve Township, Allegheny Commons, The Mexican War Streets, and Manchester for mosquitoes. Positive tests for West Nile Virus were recently found in those areas. Share this with anyone you know in those neighborhoods.

📆 Crews will use a truck mounted sprayer on Wednesday, September 9, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., to lower the local mosquito population and minimize the risk of human disease transmission. Rain date is Thursday.

💦 The pesticide used is called Zenivex E20. It is among the safest approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and considered low risk to people, pets, pollinators, and wildlife.

West Nile Virus is the leading mosquito-borne disease in the United States. It is spread to people by bites from infected mosquitoes. Cases of West Nile Virus occur during mosquito season, which starts in the spring and continues through the fall.
