The headlines about Medicare Part D are making this sound much scarier than it really is.

But first, here are the 3 biggest myths I’m hearing:

Myth #1: “My Medicare drug coverage is going away.”
❌ Nope. A temporary subsidy for insurance companies is ending. Part D plans and Medicare Advantage drug coverage are still here.

Myth #2: “There’s no longer a cap on my drug costs.”
❌ Not true. The $2,400 annual out-of-pocket cap for covered drugs is separate and remains in place.

Myth #3: “Everyone’s premiums are going way up.”
❌ Not necessarily. Changes will depend on the plan, and we won’t know the actual 2027 premiums until September. Some plans could even be lower.

Bottom line: Don’t let a scary headline make you panic or make a change before you know the facts.

I’ve had three people reach out to me this week worried that their Medicare drug coverage is being taken away. It’s not.

I don’t blame them for being confused. Some of the headlines make it sound much scarier than it actually is.

The important thing to understand is that a temporary subsidy for insurance companies is ending. That is very different from your Medicare Part D coverage being taken away.

Your protections are still in place, including the $2,400 annual out-of-pocket cap for covered drugs. Nothing about your coverage suddenly changed because of a headline.

Seeing scary headlines about Medicare Part D? Take a breath before you worry.

If you came across the recent headlines about Medicare drug plans and immediately started worrying about what this could mean for your wallet, you're not alone. Prescription costs are already a concern for many people, and the last thing anyone wants is another unexpected increase.

But there’s an important distinction that the headlines don’t always make clear.

What’s changing is a temporary government program that has helped keep Part D premiums lower over the past two years. That program is coming to an end. That does not mean your Medicare coverage is disappearing, and it does not mean Medicare as a whole is being changed.

There are also important protections that remain in place, including the $2,400 annual out-of-pocket limit for covered Part D drugs, limits on how quickly the base premium can increase, and your existing coverage if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.

And here’s another important point: we won’t have the actual 2027 plan premiums and costs until September.

So if you’ve seen a headline that made you think your Medicare costs are suddenly going to skyrocket, don’t make any decisions based on the headline alone.
