While too many patients still face barriers to accessing the oxygen they need, there is reason for optimism. LungLink® founder Richard Hinds, MS, RRT, presented "Special Considerations for Bronchiectasis Management in Hawai'i" at the 53rd Annual Hawaii Society for Respiratory Care Meeting in Honolulu. Specifically, he addressed recent guideline inconsistencies, the impact of high prevalence of reactive airways disease on the islands, local inhaled corticosteroid prescribing practices, and how these various factors influence bronchiectasis guideline implementation into practice.

22% of Maui residents living in the wildfire zone have reduced lung function 14 months later and almost 50% report increased respiratory symptoms. With wildfire frequency and size increasing, we need to consider new ways to increase respiratory surveillance and response.

This cohort study evaluates respiratory, cardiovascular, and mental health outcomes in a diverse population affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires while examining the role of social support.
