M**A is often grouped together with psychedelics, but it works differently.

Rather than primarily changing perception, M**A is known for effects that can include increased emotional openness, empathy, and trust.

Researchers have been studying whether these effects may help support therapeutic work in structured clinical settings.

At Sunstone Therapies, M**A is one of several compounds being studied as part of psychedelic-assisted therapy research. While the medicine can play an important role, we believe the broader therapeutic process matters just as much: preparation beforehand, support during treatment, and integration afterward.

The compound creates the conditions. The therapy does the work.

For many veterans, PTSD doesn’t always look like a crisis.

It can look like continuing to function while things remain unresolved, sometimes managed silently and alone.

Sunstone Therapies is conducting a clinical study evaluating a structured approach to care, designed to support patients before, during, and after treatment.

For those exploring additional options, this study is now enrolling eligible veterans in Maryland.

For many veterans suffering from PTSD, the challenge isn’t a lack of effort.

They show up. They do the work. They engage in treatment, often for years.

And sometimes, despite that commitment, symptoms remain difficult to shift.

As a veteran and physician, that reality is what drew Dr. Leith States to psychedelic-assisted therapy research.

Today, Leith serves as Sunstone’s Senior Vice President of Military Initiatives to help broaden access to evidence-based psychedelic therapies for service members and veterans.

As we recognize PTSD Awareness Month, we’re grateful for leaders who continue asking difficult questions in the service of better care.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked our team: What does mental health mean to you?

While their answers differ, a common thread runs through all of them: mental health is ongoing, something that takes tending. A relationship with yourself, your body, and the people around you. Something you practice rather than something you achieve.

We can't control what life asks of us, but we can build a foundation that helps us meet it.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we asked our therapists: What does mental health mean to you?

For Mark Bates, a clinical psychologist and retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, it’s not about never struggling.

It’s the ability to notice what’s happening inside you - your thoughts, emotions, and even the sensations in your body, without immediately being pulled around by them.

To feel grounded enough to pause.
Have some choice in how you respond.
And, stay present, even when it’s not easy.

The relationship and trust between a participant and their care team is the foundation of everything we do at Sunstone.

Nearly 1 in 4 cancer patients experience major depression, and for many, it goes undertreated alongside their medical care.

Our first psilocybin therapy study enrolled cancer patients with major depression at our Rockville clinic. The results, published in two peer-reviewed journals, showed meaningful and lasting improvement in both depression and anxiety from a single dose.

Sunstone Therapies is continuing this research. To learn more about our current clinical trials, visit https://www.sunstonetherapies.com/clinical-trials/

What makes a good psychedelic-assisted therapist?

For Rachel Winzer, our Therapist Program Director, it comes back to one word: grounded. Grounded in the research and how these medicines actually work, grounded in their own ongoing learning and supervision, and patient enough to sit with someone through a long session without rushing toward an answer.

So much of what happens in a dosing session is quiet. The therapist's role is to be a steady presence in the room, someone comfortable with not knowing exactly where things are headed, and trusted enough that the person they're sitting with can let their guard down. That's the kind of care our team carefully trains for.
