After decades in mental health, I began to notice how quickly we can move from someone's experience to an explanation for it.

But before we decide what a person needs, it is worth listening to what they have actually been through.

The story matters.

Sometimes integrity requires questioning the very work you were trained to do.

For years the conventional approach centered on diagnosis and medication. But when those methods no longer felt aligned with the principle of doing no harm it became necessary to stop observe and reconsider what truly served the person.

That shift opened the door to a different approach. With consent and appropriate care selected low risk clients were given an opportunity to reconsider their medications and even the diagnoses that had shaped how they saw themselves.

Transformation often begins with the courage to question what everyone else has accepted as the only way forward.

There may be nothing wrong with you. There may never have been.

That sentence is at the heart of Welcome to Humanity, but it doesn't mean that suffering isn't real. It is. It doesn't mean people don't need help. They do.

What I am questioning is the way we sometimes explain that suffering—and what happens when the explanation becomes more important than the person.

That is the conversation I wanted to have when I wrote this book.

You don't always need the perfect words.

One of the practices I write about in Welcome to Humanity is the authentic conversation.

We sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves to know what to say that we avoid saying anything at all. But a real conversation doesn't require a perfect response. It requires presence.

Put the phone down. Listen. Ask a question. Let someone tell you what is actually going on.

Sometimes being there is more important than having the right words.

I didn't write Welcome to Humanity because I think I have everything figured out.

I wrote it because after decades inside the mental health system, there were questions I could no longer ignore.

I had seen what the system could do. I had also seen what it could miss.

The book is my attempt to tell that story honestly—to talk about what I saw, what I came to believe, and why I eventually began questioning some of the assumptions I had spent my career accepting.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me. I do hope the book starts a conversation.
