I’ve been thinking a lot lately about lineage. About the traditions, rituals, beliefs and practices that make up our lives, and where they intersect with the conditioning that is passed down from mother to daughter.
Given my own wounding and healing, and the ways that journey has woven into my work, I mother with my lens focused on what we are taught about bodies and how to live and love inside them.
So many of the women that I work with feel, see, and know themselves as cycle breakers, as ones who are charting a dramatically different course from that of the women that have come before them. They are reclaiming lost aspects of feminine power, agency, and desire.
I wonder how many of the cycles that I think I have burned and composted will become fresh buds of empowered ways of being for Isadore.
At first, when I started to make Juicy Ladies t-shirts for her, I just thought it was cute and fun. Last summer, she was too little to really know anything about the iconography on the shirt or the meaning of the name of our community. But this year, as she’s more aware of how people are responding to the claim of juiciness across her chest, I can feel the medicine working on her. She’s proud to point out the yoni on her shirt, my hat or an auntie’s water bottle sticker.
Isadore notes yonis everywhere we go. Like me, she sees them in trees, flowers, and graphic patterns. She talks openly about hers and loves to acknowledge mine in our sweet liminal moments of bathing and dressing. I pray her relationship with yoni grows into a life long love affair with this epicenter of her aliveness.
Having her on the Juicy Ladies Retreat this summer felt so right, along with all our other very juicy summer adventures where we could be our juiciest, most uncensored selves. Surrounding her with women heartily feeding their bodies, swimming nked, laughing wildly, living into their pleasure, and dancing their aliveness is the way I want to teach her… it’s how she’ll get to find her own way of being in this one divine vessel the Goddess has gifted her… the one body that could be her beloved friend or her battlefield.
