Last night was one of those special evenings that reminds us what hospice care is truly about: helping people experience the moments that matter most.

Through Prairie Wind Hospice’s Moments That Matter program, we had the privilege of taking Renette Hisey out for an evening at The The Dugout Sports Bar & Grill in Topeka. Renette was joined by members of her family and several members of the Prairie Wind team, including Loree Parcells, Executive Director; Stacey Becker, RN; Trudy LeAnn Crowder, Hospice Liaison; Elizabeth Richmeier, Topeka Clinical Director; Dannielle Finan, Clinical Liaison; and volunteers Donna Becker and Marcie Eckhart.

Renette got to enjoy a drink and some desserts, spend time with the people who care about her, and have some fun playing the video gaming machines. It was a simple night out, but those are often the moments that mean the most.

Our Moments That Matter program is about finding opportunities to create meaningful experiences for our patients, whether that means visiting a favorite place, enjoying a special activity, or simply having an experience that brings a little extra joy to their day.

for providing transportation and helping make the evening possible, and to Renette’s family and our Prairie Wind staff who came out to share this special evening with her.

Prairie Wind Hospice’s First Veteran Recognition Initiative Ceremony

On August 12, Prairie Wind Hospice was honored to hold the first ceremony of our new Veteran Recognition Initiative (VRI), recognizing George Griffith for his service in the States Army.

Our Veteran Recognition Initiative was created to ensure that the Veterans entrusted to our care have an opportunity to be recognized and thanked for their service and sacrifice. During the ceremony, George was presented with a personalized Certificate of Honor, Certificate of Commendation, and Veteran recognition pin.

We were especially honored to have Sergeant First Class Dantre Boone, an active-duty United States Army Soldier and Army Recruiter with the Overland Park Army Recruiting Station, join us for this special occasion. SFC Boone personally pinned George’s Veteran recognition pin, making an already meaningful moment even more memorable.

A heartfelt thank you to SFC Boone for taking time from his duties to help us honor a fellow Soldier. We are incredibly grateful for his support of our program and, most importantly, for helping make this day special for George.

We would also like to thank all of the Prairie Wind Hospice staff, facility staff, and everyone else who helped coordinate and participate in our first VRI ceremony. It takes many people working together to create moments like this, and we are grateful to everyone who helped make it possible.

And to George: Thank you for your service to our country. It is our honor to care for you and our privilege to recognize you.

On August 14, members of the Prairie Wind Hospice team had the opportunity to visit the Shepherd’s Center of Topeka and share a little about hospice care and our volunteer and Memory Bear programs. Thank you to Trudy LeAnn Crowder, Clinical Liaison; Loree Parcells, Executive Director; and Elizabeth Richmeier, Topeka Clinical Director, for representing Prairie Wind and spending time connecting with members of the community. We appreciate the Shepherd's Center Topeka Kansas for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to share more about the services and support Prairie Wind Hospice provides to patients and families in the Topeka area.

Sometimes, a picture says it all. 💚

We recently had the privilege of delivering five Memory Bears to a very special family member, each lovingly handmade from clothing belonging to her loved one. As you can see from that wonderful smile, they were very well received!

Our Memory Bear volunteers put so much care into every bear they create, transforming treasured clothing into something families can hold onto for years to come.

Made from memories. Stitched with love. 🧸💚

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Makynzie Murray 🌟

This month, we’re excited to recognize one of our newer volunteers, Makynzie Murray!

Makynzie is a student at Washburn University majoring in Biology with a minor in Social Work. She plans to pursue a career in medicine and has a special interest in pediatrics and pathology.

Makynzie was drawn to hospice volunteering because she wanted to help people and be there for them during difficult times. One of her favorite parts of volunteering has been listening to patients share their life experiences. She hopes that simply being present can provide patients and families with comfort and a listening ear.

Since becoming a volunteer, Makynzie says she has learned something we believe is at the heart of hospice volunteering: “Small gestures can mean the world.” Being present, listening, and spending time with someone can make all the difference.

When she isn’t studying or volunteering, Makynzie enjoys spending time with her family and watching Gilmore Girls.

Thank you, Makynzie, for choosing to share your time and kindness with our patients and families. We’re grateful to have you as part of the Prairie Wind Hospice volunteer team!

Employee Highlight: Kerrymaie Anderson, LPN

This week, we're excited to spotlight Kerrymaie Anderson, LPN, who has been a valued member of the Prairie Wind Hospice family for the past 3½ years.

Kerrymaie has been a nurse since 2007, and before earning her nursing license, she worked in several service-focused roles, including as a PCA/PCT caring for adults with traumatic brain injuries. Throughout her career, one thing has remained constant—her heart for serving others.

When asked what she loves most about hospice, Kerrymaie's answer beautifully reflects the compassion she brings to every patient and family she serves:
"I love serving patients and their families in their final days—it's an act of love and service to care for them. I find the dying process very natural, like breathing or giving birth—the body just knows what to do. Hospice isn't for everyone; it really is a calling."

Outside of work, Kerrymaie is embracing "Lake Life!" After moving to a lake community, she and her wife have enjoyed adapting from city living to spending time outdoors. Whether she's fishing, paddle boarding, swimming, bird watching, or perfecting her latest sourdough loaf, she loves making the most of life outside. She also enjoys spending time in the kitchen—just don't ask her to do the dishes afterward!

Kerrymaie and her wife share their home with quite the furry (and shelled!) family—six dogs, three cats, and one turtle. In addition to hospice nursing, she also works at a skilled nursing facility, a role she truly enjoys. Her wife works at the Ford assembly plant doing repair work. Interestingly, Kerrymaie has never worked in a hospital outside of nursing school clinicals, as she has always been passionate about home- and community-based nursing.

A fun fact about Kerrymaie? If she hadn't become a nurse, she says she would have loved to be either an investigative journalist or a mortician—two careers driven by curiosity, compassion, and a desire to help others in very different ways.

Kerrymaie, thank you for the love, compassion, and dedication you bring to Prairie Wind Hospice every day. Your calling to care for others shines through in everything you do, and we are incredibly grateful to have you as part of our team. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our patients, their families, and your coworkers.

One of the most meaningful gifts we can offer families is a memory bear lovingly created from a cherished piece of clothing. These special keepsakes are handmade by an incredible group of volunteers known as the Bear Bunch. We asked Jolene, who started the group, to share a little about how it all began.

The Story of the Bear Bunch

In 2013, as my retirement date approached, I began looking for a volunteer opportunity to keep me moderately busy. I found a hospice group that was looking for someone with sewing experience. After the death of their loved ones, families were offered teddy bears to be made from articles of their clothing. The idea was very close to my heart as I had recently lost my husband. If a memory bear could help someone in their grief, I was in.

I initially worked solo on this project. Then my friend Sue asked if I would make a memory bear for her. My response was, “I will help you make a memory bear.” Another friend, Donna, asked me the same question, and my response was the same. With a little persuasion, Sue and Donna became long-time members of the "Bear Bunch," as we came to be known.

Two other friends, Barb and Patty, heard about the memory bears and joined the team. They both brought years of sewing experience and awesome skills. While they can contribute to all stages of bear-making, Barb has assumed the role of the pattern cutter, and Patty is at home in front of a sewing machine. My basement is set up with multiple sewing machines, a cutting table, and a table where bears are stuffed and given the finishing touches of eyes, a nose, and a ribbon bow.

Sue and Donna have since moved on and are greatly missed. The mission continues with Patty, Barb, myself, and our newest member, my friend Roy. While he doesn’t sew, his contributions are many. He pins pieces together, rips out a few mistakes that we make, maintains the sewing machines, and stuffs bears once they’re sewn up.

We are often asked how many bears we've made. I have no idea how many have been made over 12 and a half years, but I venture to guess it's been over a thousand. Last year we did keep track of the number of bears made, and it was just shy of 200. We feel fortunate to be able to help families and are committed to that mission.

The group meets nearly every Monday morning at my home, rain or shine, just like the U.S. Mail! We are looking for another member to join us. Sewing experience is optional. There are parts of the process that can easily be learned. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining us, let Michael Brockhouse know.

A big thank you to our Topeka Clinical Liaison, Trudy Crowder, for representing Prairie Wind Hospice at the Golden Connections Resource Fair hosted by the Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging this past Saturday at the Agriculture Hall in Topeka.

Even though it was her day off, Trudy generously gave her time to connect with community members, answer questions, and share information about the compassionate care Prairie Wind Hospice provides. Her willingness to serve others, both inside and outside the office, is just one example of the dedication she brings to our team every day.

Thank you, Trudy, for being such a wonderful ambassador for Prairie Wind Hospice and for making a difference in our community!
