👶 When Feeding Just Wasn't Going Smoothly 🤱
I recently met a very sweet newborn who was struggling with feeding. 💛
Baby would often fatigue while nursing, or feeds would take an excessive amount of time. Mom had already had one visit with an IBCLC and was also seeing a chiropractor back home.
There was some concern for potential oral ties, but the IBCLC wanted to first work on baby's body and oral function to see if we could improve tongue function before considering a release.
So we took a closer look.
During my evaluation, I noticed baby had a latch that lacked a strong, coordinated suck and was fairly easy to break. I also found quite a bit of tension through the mid-back, along with more tension on one side of the body.
We did a gentle full-body adjustment, some cranial work (including my favorite bone—the sphenoid 😉), and finished with a few simple stretches for mom to continue at home.
I also encouraged the family to continue the oral exercises they had been given by their IBCLC.
And then came the best part...
Mom messaged me that night and said baby had the best milk transfer he had experienced in weeks. 🥹❤️
Was chiropractic the only piece of the puzzle? No.
And that's exactly why I love a team approach.
The IBCLC was working on feeding and oral function. We were working on body tension and movement. Mom was carrying that work home through the exercises.
Sometimes it's not about finding one answer. It's about putting the right pieces together and giving baby the support they need.
And as a mom myself, I know how meaningful it is when feeding finally starts to feel a little easier. 🤍
