Hel is the ruler of the Norse underworld that bears her name, Helheim, a realm reserved not for the wicked, but for those who died of sickness or old age rather than in battle. Norse belief drew a sharp line between glorious death and ordinary death, and Hel governed the far larger, far quieter side of that divide.

She is the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, and her siblings are Jörmungandr, the serpent that encircles the world, and Fenrir, the wolf fated to kill Odin at Ragnarok. Odin, foreseeing the danger this family posed, cast Hel down into the underworld himself and gave her authority over nine of its realms.

Norse sources describe her as half living flesh, half corpse-blue and decayed, a body split down the middle between life and death, matching the role she occupies between them. She is not a figure of cruelty or judgment in the moral sense. Her rule is administrative, not vindictive: she simply keeps what comes to her, including, in one of the more devastating myths, the beloved god Baldr, whom not even the combined pleading of every other god could convince her to release.

Not every death in Norse mythology was heroic. Hel ruled the ones that weren't, and never apologized for it.

Faith, Hope, and Love, the greatest being Love. How can we be beings of Love and Light, when we deny that to those we made a commitment to?

Marriage takes imperfect people willing to accept eachother, helping eachother to heal by loving not the imperfections, but the soul and individual.

Marriage takes imperfect people and creates one life long union of souls, one flesh. When your body becomes ill, you heal it, not destroy it. If your arm breaks and fails you, do you have it removed, or see a Dr to get it fixed?

You're not perfect, neither are they. Accept that truth, accept and forgive the imperfections, heal eachother through Faith, Hope, and Love, mostly love eachother through all things. Keep others out of your marriage. You and your partner are one, no one else can make it work other than the two of you.
