Insult resistance can exist quietly for years — and it isn’t simply a “blood sugar problem.” Insulin is a hormone that acts as a signal. It binds to insulin receptors on target cells and helps signal the body to take up, use, or store glucose.
But when cells become less responsive to insulin’s signal, the body has a harder time managing glucose effectively.
So what happens?
The pancreas can compensate by producing more insulin to help overcome that resistance. For a while, blood glucose may still remain within a “normal” range — because the pancreas is working harder to keep it there.But if that demand continues and the body can no longer compensate adequately, glucose can begin to rise, increasing the risk of prediabetes and eventually type 2 diabetes.
And this is why I don’t look at blood sugar in isolation.
Insulin signaling can be influenced by the bigger metabolic picture — including stress and cortisol, sleep, physical activity, inflammation, body composition, liver health, and underlying hormonal or metabolic conditions.
Your body isn’t a collection of separate systems. It’s a network. So sometimes the question isn’t just:
“What is your blood sugar doing?”
It’s: “Why is your body having to work so hard to regulate it?”
