The importance of Black Breastfeeding Week is historic. Before we talk about the gap in Black breastfeeding rates — we have to name the wound.

“For nearly 250 years, Black women were forced to nurse enslaving families' children while their own babies went without. That trauma didn't end with emancipation. It was passed down.

What some call hesitancy, we call inherited protection.”
Clementé G. Love, CLC® Clem the Doula

This week we reclaim our story. And we remember: we all we got.

Know Your Rights!
A reminder every Black family in Iowa deserves to hear:

Iowa Code, Section 135.30A.
"A mother is entitled to breastfeed her baby or express breast milk in any location in which the mother's presence is otherwise authorized."

Any public place. Any private place. Anywhere you are legally allowed to be. No cover up required. No moving to a bathroom. No leaving.

Your baby eats where you eat. Save this. Share this.

It's Black Breastfeeding Week and we are showing up ALL WEEK. 🤎
Black Breastfeeding Week (B*W) is observed annually August 25–31 as part of National Breastfeeding Month. It was founded by Black women to address the unique cultural, historical, and systemic barriers Black families face around infant feeding — barriers rooted in the exploitation of Black women’s bodies during slavery and sustained by structural inequities in the healthcare system.

This year's theme because WE show up for each other. Let's go, Iowa.
