For breastfeeding support, check if you qualify for free visits through The Lactation Network by visiting this link (https://go.lactationnetwork.com/BenderLactationConsulting). These fees may (or may not) be reimbursed through your insurance company depending on your plan. I recommend calling your insurance company with my NPI number, to see at what level they reimburse. Breast-feeding is considered preventative care, which by law is meant to be reimbursed under the Affordable Care Act.

As the insurance environment continues to change for the worse for breastfeeding mothers, the facts stay the same.

United has now joined Blue Cross Blue Shield in no longer covering breastfeeding support from IBCLCs through The Lactation Network.

But here’s what I know after 13+ years as an IBCLC and more than 20 years supporting mothers:

Breastfeeding support is worth the investment. It’s worth prioritizing.

Breastfeeding is optimal feeding during one of the most sensitive and important seasons of your baby’s life. And when breastfeeding is difficult, the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference.

A private-pay 90-minute lactation consultation with me is $225.

That’s comparable to the cost of:
• 5 cans of formula
• A baby swing
• Several packages of diapers
• A hair or nail appointment

Those things have value, too. But lactation support is an investment in something you and your baby are doing every single day.

And the dividends of supporting breastfeeding can extend across a lifetime of health.

I know this work personally, too.

These are pictures of my own breastfed babies—Claire, now 13, who breastfed with many struggles, and Patrick, now 9, who was born with a cleft and was exclusively pumped for.

I earned my IBCLC in 2013, but I began assisting mothers in 2005. So, let’s just say… I’ve been doing this for a while. 😉

If breastfeeding is important to you, don’t wait until you’re completely overwhelmed to ask for help.
