So much of the conversation about weight stigma focuses - understandably - on harm.

The discrimination. The assumptions. The shame. The spaces that weren't built with every body in mind.

But challenging weight stigma is also about asking what we want to create instead.

Belonging.
Dignity.
Access.
Representation.
Connection.
Joy.

This year's Weight Stigma Awareness Week theme, "The Power of Fat Joy," invites us to expand the conversation beyond reducing harm and to make room for visibility, belonging, community, self-determination, creativity, and joy.

Because people in larger bodies deserve more than a life with less stigma.

They deserve to participate fully. To receive respectful care. To see themselves represented. To be comfortable in public spaces. To experience connection.

And to experience joy without apology.

As Weight Stigma Awareness Week comes to a close, we hope the conversation doesn't.

Awareness can begin during a campaign. Respect and inclusion should continue every day.

Weight stigma is woven into many of the messages we're exposed to about bodies, health, food, beauty, and worth.

Changing those messages begins with noticing them.

We can challenge weight stigma when we:

Notice weight-based jokes and stereotypes.
Stop making other people's bodies a topic of conversation.
Question assumptions about someone's health or habits based on appearance.
Pay attention to whether our physical spaces are inclusive.
Learn from people whose experiences with weight stigma may be different from our own.
Speak up when we see weight-based discrimination.

You don't have to know everything before you start.

Awareness can be the beginning of doing things differently.

For World Su***de Prevention Day, we’re reminded that conversations can matter, connection can matter, and support can make a difference.

At Restored Purpose Counseling, we believe in creating space for people to feel seen, heard, and supported β€” especially during the moments that feel the heaviest. You do not have to have the perfect words to reach out, and you do not have to wait until things feel unbearable to ask for help.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, call or text 988 to connect with the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline for free, confidential support 24/7.

Today, and every day, we hope to help build a community where asking for support is met with compassion, dignity, and care.

You matter. Your story matters. Support is available.

There is no single way to "look like" someone who has an eating disorder.

Eating disorders can affect people across the body-size spectrum.

Yet weight stigma can influence whether someone's symptoms are recognized, whether they seek treatment, and whether they receive appropriate eating-disorder care.

Someone's suffering doesn't become less serious because their body doesn't match a stereotype of what an eating disorder is "supposed" to look like.

And recovery shouldn't be determined by whether someone's body fits someone else's idea of what is acceptable.

At Restored Purpose Counseling, we believe people deserve to have their experiences heard and their concerns taken seriously.

You are more than a number.
You are more than a body size.
And you deserve care that sees the whole person.

This Weight Stigma Awareness Week, we're helping challenge the idea that we can determine someone's health, behaviors, struggles, or needs simply by looking at their body.

Weight stigma isn't confined to one place.

It can happen in healthcare. At school. At work. Around the dinner table. At the gym. On social media. And even in physical spaces that weren't designed with people of all sizes in mind.

Some forms of weight stigma are obvious. Others are so normalized that we may not recognize them until we start paying attention.

That is part of why awareness matters.

Instead of only asking, "Would I ever intentionally shame someone for their body?"

We can also ask: "What assumptions about bodies have I learned without realizing it?"

Awareness gives us an opportunity to notice those messages - and choose something different.

This week, we're recognizing Weight Stigma Awareness Week.

So let's begin by talking about what weight stigma actually is.

Weight stigma refers to discrimination, stereotypes, and assumptions made about someone because of their body size.

And it doesn't only show up through obviously hurtful comments.

It can look like assuming you know someone's health simply by looking at them.

It can happen when someone's symptoms aren't fully explored because the conversation immediately becomes about weight.

It can show up in jokes, media portrayals, workplace discrimination, bullying, or public spaces that weren't designed to comfortably accommodate people of different sizes.

Sometimes, it even shows up in comments that were intended to be helpful.

Recognizing weight stigma isn't about getting every word right. It's about becoming more aware of the assumptions we've learned - and becoming willing to challenge them.

Because every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of the size of their body.

Learning to feel more at peace in your body doesn't happen in one moment.

It takes time, care, and trust.

And sometimes one of the hardest parts is simply giving yourself permission to begin.

You don't need to fight your body to feel okay in it.

You don't need to reach some perfect level of confidence.

And you don't need to wait until every negative body thought disappears before participating in your life.

With support, you can begin challenging harmful body beliefs, building positive habits, and creating a relationship with your body that feels less like a constant source of worry.

It's not about reaching perfection. It's about creating space where acceptance can grow.

Whether body-image concerns are new or something you've carried for years, you don't have to navigate them alone.

Restored Purpose Counseling offers individualized body-image therapy and nutrition counseling for people looking for support as they work toward greater self-respect and body trust.

Sometimes it starts with a passing glance in the mirror.

A picture online. Getting dressed. A pool party. A family beach trip.

Or simply feeling like everyone around you is more comfortable in their body than you are.

Body-image thoughts can become loud enough that they begin influencing how you feel about yourself and how you participate in your life.

You may find yourself pulling away from social plans, avoiding meals, exercising in ways that feel punishing, or experiencing doubt or shame after seeing your reflection or a photograph.

Body image therapy gives you space to slow those thoughts down and begin asking:
Where did these beliefs come from?
Who told me I had to look a certain way?
Why is it so difficult to feel okay in my own skin?

You don't have to have the answers before starting therapy. Sometimes having a safe place to begin asking the questions is an important first step.

If body-image thoughts are making it harder to feel present in your life, you don't have to work through them on your own. Our team is here to help you explore
those thoughts with curiosity, compassion, and support. Reach out to Restored Purpose Counseling to learn more about body image therapy and how we can
support you.

Comparison has a way of getting loud.

A picture online. Someone at the pool. Getting dressed for an event. Seeing yourself in a photo you weren't expecting.

Suddenly, you're not simply experiencing the moment anymore - you're evaluating your body within it.

Our blog offers a different question: "What does my body need from me today?"

Maybe you need to put your phone down for a while. Maybe you choose clothes that help you feel comfortable and at ease. Maybe you take a moment to check in with yourself and notice what you need to feel more grounded. Or maybe you go to the beach even while feeling unsure and give yourself permission to enjoy the water, the sunshine, and the experience.

Everybody, regardless of shape, size, or color, deserves respect, kindness, and comfort.
