Happy Father’s Day! Today we are celebrating all the dads and father figures who make a difference in our lives.

We know Father’s Day isn’t easy for everyone. For those missing someone, or whose journey looks different, we are thinking of you too.

However you spend today, we hope it is filled with kindness, connection and care.

"The right chair can be the difference between needing someone with you all day, and being able to spend time at home alone."

Our next instalment of You Can't Ask That with OT's Sophie and Chrissy and this one is about what's actually possible!

Will my home end up looking like a hospital?
What's the difference between just managing and actually living well at home?
Does equipment have to be expensive?
And the chair. Oh, the chair. 🪑

Thank you for following along with this series. If it's sparked something, for you, your parents, or someone you support, please don't wait. Reach out.

Don't take it from us, hear it from the people who've lived it.

Ruby, Kate and Aayusha all came through the Gen Health Hamilton New Graduate Program, so we asked them what it was actually like. Their answers are honest, funny, and everything a final year physio student needs to hear.

"You definitely know more than you think you do." 🥹

We're very proud of these girls and their growth. If Gen Health sounds like somewhere you'd love to land your first role, we'd love to hear from you.

"Having an independent person come in and make these suggestions really takes the responsibility off you as the adult child."

If you've ever sat across from your parent at the dinner table, knowing something needs to change but not knowing how to start that conversation, this episode is for you.

Lots of older people fiercely resist giving up their garden. So instead of fighting it, the conversation becomes: "What are the jobs you hate doing? Let's offload those, so you can enjoy your tulips." That's OT. Meeting people where they are.

Other questions we answer: Do I need a referral to see an OT? (No referral needed though we do work closely with other health professionals who can refer with relevant information, where needed.)

Can OT actually help someone avoid residential care? Sometimes yes, by putting the right strategies and supports in place to keep someone at home safely. And sometimes, residential care really is the most appropriate decision, offering more social engagement, structured support, and lifting the daily load from family so that time together becomes enjoyable again. OT can support both pathways.

And the gold nugget, how do you even start that conversation with your parents? 😟
It's hard. Sophie and Chrissy are honest about that, but also encourage you not to put it off or wait for something to go wrong medically.

The earlier you can put supportive systems in place, the more control your family has over what that looks like. Having an OT come in as an independent voice takes the weight off your shoulders. It's not about what's happening right now. It's about planning for what you want your future to look like.

If that conversation is overdue in your family, we're here.

Round two of You Can't Ask That Occupational Therapy Version with Chrissy and Sophie, this time

This week they tackle four of the questions we hear most 👇

"My parent keeps saying they're fine, but how do I actually know?"
Have they stopped doing the things they love? Are they spending more time at home? Is the fridge looking emptier than usual, or are they skipping regular meals? These are the things worth paying attention to.

"Does needing equipment mean losing independence?"
The opposite, actually. The right equipment is often what keeps someone at home, safe, mobile, and doing the things that matter to them. It's a tool for living well.

"Can small changes around the house really prevent falls?"
Before equipment even comes into the picture, an OT looks at your environment and the way you're doing everyday tasks. There is so much that can be done before a single rail goes up!

"What's the biggest misconception about OT?"
That it's all shower chairs, toilet frames and telling you to remove your rugs. 😅 OT covers the full spectrum of what makes daily life possible, from managing medications and remembering appointments, to accessing the community and supporting people at every stage of life. "Occupations are all of the things you want and need to do."

If any of this sounds familiar, for you, your parents, or someone you support, we'd love to help.

Brand new You Can’t Ask That series! This one is for anyone who has ever Googled, “How do I know if Mum/Dad needs more help?” 🥹

OT is one of the most misunderstood, and most underutilised, services. There are so many questions that families, carers, and older adults have that nobody quite knows how to ask.
So we’re asking them! Tackling everything from:

Can an OT actually help Mum or Dad stay at home for longer?
Will the house end up looking like a hospital?
What’s the biggest myth about mobility aids?
My parent keeps saying they’re “fine”, what are the signs they actually might not be?
How much difference can the right chair really make?
And our personal favourite: “Does someone have to have a fall before an OT can help?”

Tag someone who needs this series. 💚
