Friday Reflections: The Cost of Being Available to Everything

We live in a world where interruptions are always within reach. Messages, emails, opinions, requests, and expectations can make it feel as though we should always be available.

But what if we don’t need to respond to everything?

This week’s reflection invites us to pause and consider: What are we giving our attention to that is costing us our peace?

For carers especially, protecting your energy isn’t selfish. It’s stewardship. Setting boundaries and choosing where we place our attention can create space to breathe, reset, and find greater balance.

Sometimes peace doesn’t come from gaining more control. Sometimes it comes from releasing it.

The Helping Minds team recently had the opportunity to attend the 2026 WA Mental Health Conference.

Across two days, we heard thought-provoking perspectives, shared ideas, and connected with others who are passionate about supporting mental health and wellbeing. 🩵

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the conversations and generously shared their knowledge, experiences and ideas. We’re taking plenty of inspiration and learnings away with us as we continue working towards mentally healthy communities across WA.

Yesterday was such a great day at In Your Head 🩵

It was fantastic to be there alongside hundreds of young people and teachers for a day full of connection and real conversations about wellbeing, resilience and mental health.

We loved meeting everyone who stopped by our table. A huge thank you to zero2hero for putting together an incredible day and for creating a space where these conversations can happen.

We’re proud to have been part of it 🙌

Friday Reflections: Ordinary Moments, Extraordinary Impact

Sometimes, the moments that seem ordinary to us can leave an extraordinary mark.

A song, a conversation, a kind word, a smile, or simply checking in when someone is struggling can change the course of someone’s day, and sometimes, much more than that.

This week’s reflection asks us to pause and consider: What small moments have stayed with you? For carers especially, the everyday moments of showing up, listening, encouraging and simply being there can carry a significance we may never fully realise.

Sometimes, what feels ordinary to us is extraordinary to someone else.

This week, Helping Minds CEO Debbie Childs joined Doug from Sonshine FM to shine a light on the realities faced by unpaid carers across Australia.

Unpaid carers are the backbone of our health system, yet many feel exhausted, invisible and unsupported. Recent reports that the Carer Gateway’s 24-hour phone service has been reduced to business hours have renewed concerns about whether carers can access support when they need it most.

As Debbie says: “Caring doesn’t happen neatly within business hours.”

Our WA Recovery College Alliance Lead, Hilary Lee, recently joined Natalie Browning from ABC Wheatbelt on ABC Radio to talk about the important work of the WA Recovery College and the difference accessible, lived-experience-led education can make in people’s recovery journeys.

Hilary shares how the Recovery College helps people build knowledge, confidence, skills and connections, while creating opportunities for people with lived experience to have a genuine voice in shaping the support and education available to their community.

She also discusses the College’s unique Educator Program, which supports participants to turn their own experiences and knowledge into something they can share with others - moving from course participants to co-creators and educators.
