Yoga teaches us to pause before we react. And I’m taking that off the mat in a big way lately.
My son and I have a safe word. Not for emergencies, although it certainly could be used for them. But for arguments.
When things start to heat up between us and we can feel a full blown disagreement coming, whoever gets there first says the word. And then we both walk away, no hard feelings. We then give ourselves, and each other, permission to take some breaths, calm down, and get our thoughts together. And when we’re both ready, we come back and try again.
Yesterday I used it.
And honestly? It was one of the most mindful things I’ve done all week.
Because this is exactly what Yoga teaches us. Not just on the mat, but in the kitchen, in the car, in the middle of a Tuesday afternoon with your tweenager.
Pause before you react. Breathe before you speak. Create just enough space to choose a wiser response.
That’s the practice. And sometimes the most powerful tool you have isn’t a pose or a meditation technique.
Sometimes it’s a safe word.
