A Ukrainian paramedic teaches in Russian while his lesson is translated into Bulgarian—one moment that reflects the power of collaboration and local leadership.

Together with our partners- Canadian Red Cross, Български Червен кръст (Bulgarian Red Cross) and the @Медицински университет, град Пловдив (Официална Страница)- CGS has trained 230 healthcare providers and certified 29 instructors across Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Proud to share this publication, developed in collaboration with our partners in Nepal.

🩺 This study examines the impact of the Rural Emergency Trauma System Strengthening (RETSS) programme, a collaborative initiative among the CGS, the Nepal Red Cross Society, the Canadian Red Cross, and local healthcare leaders to strengthen emergency and trauma care in rural Nepal. 🏥

The findings highlight how locally led, sustainable training models can strengthen healthcare systems in disaster-prone settings.

🌟 The latest issue of The Square Knot, the newsletter of McGill University's Department of Surgery, includes an article on CGS participation in a Sub-Arctic Winter Field Hospital Readiness Exercise in Chisasibi, Quebec.

The initiative, led by the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, focused on strengthening healthcare preparedness in remote northern communities.

Last week, the CGS, in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, Български Червен кръст (Bulgarian Red Cross) and the Медицински университет, град Пловдив (Официална Страница), delivered trauma and emergency response training in Bulgaria, bringing together healthcare professionals, first responders, and humanitarian personnel from Bulgaria and Ukraine.

The program began with a Training of Trainers (ToT) component designed to develop future instructors in Trauma and Disaster Team Response (TDTR) and Essential Trauma Skills (ETS). Combined with TDTR and ETS training for participants, the initiative reached more than 90 individuals. By investing in local trainers and strengthening teaching capacity, the program supports a sustainable model for expanding trauma and emergency response education across Bulgaria and Ukraine.

This initiative highlights the value of 🌟 global collaboration 🌟 in strengthening emergency preparedness and local leadership. By sharing knowledge, developing new trainers, and fostering regional partnerships, we are helping create a sustainable network of responders equipped to support their communities during emergencies and disasters.

Surgery is not a luxury. It is a fundamental human right. 🩺🌍

On this , institutions like The Lancet Commission and Harvard PGSSC remind us of a harsh reality: 5 billion people still lack access to safe, affordable surgical and anesthesia care.

Right now at the 79th World Health Assembly (hashtag ), organizations like the G4 Alliance and the WFSA are making a clear statement: Universal Health Coverage cannot exist without integrating essential surgery into global public health strategies.

Thank you to all the surgeons, anesthesiologists, and healthcare teams working on the frontlines to deliver safe care where it’s needed most.

Let's keep pushing for health equity. Surgery saves lives.
