What does quality mental health care look like when it’s designed with people, not just for them?

Alisha’s story demonstrates how lived and living experience is helping to shape more person-centred, culturally safe and equitable mental health care. Through its Quality Mental Health Care Framework and Implementation Toolkit, the Quality Mental Health Care Network offers practical tools to help organizations turn these principles into action and improve how care is designed and delivered.

“Violence is not a part of your job.”

In a new episode of The Gritty Nurse Podcast with Amie Archibald-Varley, Dr. Mike Heenan, President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, speaks candidly about the violence healthcare workers experience, St. Joe’s efforts to encourage reporting and turn that reporting into action, and why creating safer workplaces requires leadership, transparency and accountability.

Like Dr. Heenan, HealthCareCAN strongly believes healthcare workers deserve to feel safe at work, and perpetrators of violence must face meaningful consequences. We’re calling on the federal government to pass Bill S-233 and strengthen protections for the people who care for Canadians.

Canada has one of the lowest acute care beds per capita compared to other OECD countries. This is a significant contributor to hospital overcrowding and hallway medicine.

HealthCareCAN recommends the new Federal Health Infrastructure Fund be used to upgrade hospitals to accommodate more beds and diagnostic services.

Canada has the talent, research excellence and public institutions to be a global leader in health and life sciences, but without a clear industrial strategy, we are leaving growth, jobs and innovation on the table.

Hospitals, health authorities and health research organizations must be core partners in that strategy. They are where discoveries are tested, clinical trials are run, technologies are validated and innovation moves from idea to impact.

Budget 2026 is an opportunity to change that.

Canada has the potential to be a global leader in clinical trials.

We already rank among the top countries worldwide, with world-class researchers, strong institutions, and a growing life sciences sector. But other countries are moving quickly, attracting investment, talent, and trials through more coordinated national strategies.

In our op-ed, HealthCareCAN President and CEO, Michelle McLean, outlines what it will take for Canada to strengthen its competitive edge and capture a larger share of a rapidly growing global market.

With the right federal leadership, Canada can build on its strengths and position itself as a destination of choice for clinical trials, delivering benefits for patients, the health system, and the economy.

Canada’s healthcare system depends on more than people and programs. It also depends on the physical and digital infrastructure that makes modern care possible.

Hospitals, health facilities, data systems, secure connectivity and community health infrastructure are the foundation for better care, innovation adoption and health system resilience.

But over half of Canada’s hospitals and health facilities were built more than 50 years ago.

Budget 2026 is an opportunity to treat health infrastructure as nation-building, with a long-term federal capital program for physical and digital infrastructure.

Congratulations to Sinai Health and its partners on securing renewed funding to advance research into understanding how cancer cells evade treatment. This work has the potential to improve outcomes for patients by paving the way for more effective, longer-lasting therapies.

Canada's hospitals are strategic national assets, where research discoveries become better care for patients. They bring together scientists, clinicians and patients to transform discoveries into new treatments, strengthen Canada's life sciences ecosystem and improve health outcomes.

should put Canada's health system at the centre of the country's life sciences strategy, ensuring hospitals and health research organizations have the support they need to accelerate innovation and deliver it to patients.

A renewed $9 million grant is accelerating research into one of cancer care's greatest challenges: why some tumours survive treatment and return. By uncovering the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to change and resist therapy, a team of Sinai Health researchers hope to pave the way for longer-last...
