Twenty years ago, I graduated from CCNM as a Naturopathic Doctor.

I wasn’t sure how it would all play out, as naturopathic medicine wasn’t well known or accepted at the time, but I knew in my soul that it was what I wanted to do and how I truly felt I could help people.

The first photo was taken that day with my Father- my biggest supporter. Today also marks 13 years since his passing.

He taught me the values that continue to guide me every day: integrity, honesty, humility, the importance of asking the right questions and truly listening to what people have to say.

The second photo is from our 20 year class reunion with classmates who have become lifelong friends. We grew together as students, as practitioners, and as people. The bond we share is one I’ll always treasure.

We became practitioners who supported one another, stayed humble in our growth as healers, and worked from a mindset of knowing we were always stronger when we worked together.

I’ve learned that while supplements can be valuable tools, they can never replace the foundations of health: a balanced nervous system, good nutrition, movement, sleep, meaningful connection, and of course a healthy microbiome.

Twenty years in practice has taught me that health is rarely simple. It cannot be reduced to a protocol or a double blind placebo controlled study. Each person has a unique combination of genetics, biochemistry, life experiences, trauma, infections, environmental exposures, and microbiome influences.

Experience teaches you to listen more carefully.
To ask better questions.
To recognize patterns.
To know when to investigate further.
To understand when the best course of action is to refer.
And to be comfortable saying, “I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out together.”

Each person brings a unique story and some of the most meaningful healing begins when they feel truly heard.

The stories my patients share stay with me and what a privilege to be trusted enough to hear them.

I feel grateful to my Father, my classmates, and every patient who has trusted me with their care. And to my husband and children who continue to support and motivate me each and every day 🤍

Resistant starch: what's the hype? It sounds trendy, but the science is actually pretty solid.

Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate that "resists" digestion in the small intestine and makes its way to the colon, where your gut microbes get to work. Instead of spiking blood sugar like a typical starch, it behaves more like a prebiotic fiber.

Why the buzz?
→ Feeds beneficial gut bacteria
→ Helps increase short chain fatty acids like butyrate, a major fuel source for your colon cells
→ Supports gut barrier integrity
→ Helps blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity
→ Improves satiety and metabolic health

The research backs it up. A 2024 review, a 2024 human study, and a 2025 meta-analysis all found benefits, from weight loss and improved insulin resistance to increases in beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium.

The easiest ways to add it to your day:
→ Cook + cool potatoes (hello potato salad)
→ Cook + cool rice
→ Overnight oats
→ Lentils, beans + chickpeas
→ Green-ish bananas
→ Barley + legumes

Important note: more is not always better. If your gut is sensitive (IBS, bloating, SIBO history), start low and go slow.

My favourite reminder: sometimes the "gut health hack" is not a supplement… it's yesterday's rice and potatoes

Save this for later

Weight loss resistance isn't always about willpower. Sometimes…it's your gut.

If you're doing everything right, eating well, exercising, staying consistent and the scale still won't budge, it might not be a calorie problem.

It might be a microbiome problem.

Your gut bacteria play a direct role in:
→ How your body extracts and uses energy from food
→ Hunger and fullness signals like GLP-1 and Ghrelin
→ Blood sugar regulation
→ Whether your body favors fat storage or fat burning

Your gut talks to your brain influencing eating behaviours and cravings

When the microbiome is disrupted, metabolism follows. Inflammation rises. Hormone signaling gets thrown off. The body shifts into a protective, fat-storing state and stays there, even when you're doing "all the right things."

What makes this especially frustrating? It becomes self-reinforcing. The more disrupted the gut, the harder fat loss becomes, regardless of effort or restriction.

More restriction isn't the answer.

The missing piece is often gut health itself:
→ Restoring microbial balance
→ Supporting the gut barrier
→ Reducing chronic immune activation and inflammation

Fat loss becomes easier when the body feels safe enough to let it go. That's the part most programs miss. We don't just treat the symptom, we treat the individual terrain.

Big milestone 🎉

I’m officially a certified Microbiome Clinical Science Practitioner - MCS-P through The Biome Learning Centre and proud to be one of the first practitioners in Canada to complete this training.

This was part of the inaugural cohort of graduate-level education focused on the latest in microbiome science and a truly clinical, microbiome-centered framework for navigating complex cases. From all aspects of digestive health and immune system function, to metabolism, mood and the gut-brain axis - we covered it all!

Since October, this journey has included nearly 80 lessons, 25 guest expert training, and a comprehensive final exam, all centered around one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving areas in health.

The microbiome isn’t just a trend, it’s foundational to how we understand chronic and complex conditions and building resiliency for long lasting health and longevity. I’m excited to bring this deeper level of insight into my work and continue supporting patients with terrain first, root-cause approach.

Living with IBS? You're not alone, and you're not "making it up."

April is IBS Awareness Month, and I want you to know that your symptoms, the bloating, pain, food anxiety, and fatigue, are real and valid.

IBS isn't just a digestive issue. It's a complex condition that involves your gut microbiome, nervous system, and gut-brain connection.

That's why cookie-cutter approaches often fall short.

In my practice, we dig deeper to find YOUR root causes, whether that's SIBO, microbiome imbalances, nervous system dysregulation, or other underlying factors.

You don't have to live with constant digestive distress. There are answers, and there is hope.

Have you been told your symptoms are "just IBS" without getting real answers? Share your experience below, you're not alone.

The missing piece in ADHD diagnosis that no one talks about

Most kids and adults get diagnosed without anyone checking their iron status.

Here's what the research shows and what you need to know

Poor sleep and emotional dysregulation are among the most common, and most overlooked, presentations of low ferritin in kids and adults with ADHD.

They aren't just ADHD symptoms. They may be downstream consequences of an iron-depleted brain.

6 out of 6 treatment studies, including 2 RCTs, showed iron supplementation improved ADHD symptoms in iron-deficient children. One RCT found adding iron to methylphenidate produced significantly greater improvement than medication alone.

The cognitive effects of iron deficiency in infancy were largely mediated through ADHD behaviors at ages 5, 10, and 16. This isn't just correlation, it may be causation.

If this sounds like you or your child, and you're looking for comprehensive care that addresses root causes, not just symptoms, book a consultation. Link in bio.

Save this if you or someone you love has ADHD.

Your symptoms matter. Your experience matters. You matter.

Just because standard testing doesn't show a problem doesn't mean there isn't one. You deserve a provider who listens and investigates thoroughly.
