Last week I entered a loud, bright, busy room for the national launch of the Listen2Baby Toolkit.

As an Autistic & ADHD Mum, a doula, and someone with Maternity system PTSD who helped to co-design this project, it was a big sensory and emotional overload for me. The day triggered my own birth trauma, remembering the exact moment I allowed Intermittent Auscultation (IA) to be weaponised against me in my second birth.

Being one of only a few people in the room who is not a clinical expert, I felt a duty to carry the Mother's voice loudly to the forefront. Part of that was watching Progress Theatre perform - hearing real women’s voices, including what may be my very own words, echoed back to the system.

There is an alarming lack of robust evidence for routine monitoring in straightforward births. This toolkit came into being in order to standardise practice in the name of safety for women, babies and midwives and to protect hospitals from liability.

But as we standardise practice, we must remember never to standardise women.

IA isn't a neutral act. It breaks the organic rhythm of birth. When we override mother's instincts or consent for a checklist, we are engaging in obstetric violence and creating iatrogenic harm. True safety cannot be measured solely by a live baby if the Mother is left psychologically shattered and traumatised.

True safety requires a regulated nervous system too. I am glad the toolkit uses the BRAIN framework to push for antenatal discussions where women can choose for themselves and trust their Intuition.

But a leaflet is not enough.

Informed consent of IA and the absolute right to refusal of IA must be explicitly trained into midwives, not just assumed.

Sending gratitude to Rachel Rowe, Megan Douthwaite, and Jen MacLellan for the research, and to Mo Ade and Sumayya Mulla for bringing forth women’s experiences. To the policy makers - Alison Talbot, Tony Kelly, and Jaki Lambert - Please ensure this framework shifts from an institutional scorecard towards true, embodied safety and respect at homebirths and on the labour wards.

Specialist car seat safety advisors will be on hand at Lidl, Hungerdown Lane, Chippenham, from 10am to 3pm, today (Tuursday 23rd April), offering friendly, no-judgement support on how to correctly choose, fit and use child car seats.

With numerous regulations, fitting methods and seat designs on the market, ensuring a car seat is set up correctly can be confusing. Advisors will be available to check seats, answer questions and make sure each one is installed and used as safely as possible.

They can also provide guidance on common topics, including:

When to move a child to the next stage seat
How tight the harness should be
Vehicle compatibility
How clothing, headrest height and seat positioning affect safety.

Practical tips will also be available on:

Removing thick coats before fastening the harness
Limiting time in an infant carrier to two hours
Checking harness tension and positioning
Ensuring seats don't move excessively once installed
Keeping children rear‑facing for as long as possible.
