Yesterday, we hosted Kaitlyn Bodsworth, a high school technician and trainee teacher intern who is working alongside the BioQuarter Community Impact Team on an exciting partnership to develop new practical resources for the Higher Human Biology curriculum. The project is part of the Edinburgh Medical School 300 programme.

The collaboration with SSERC will contribute to the creation of new experiment protocols that will be shared with teachers across Scotland and incorporated into future Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions.

During the visit, Kaitlynn met researchers from the Institute for Regeneration and Repair and The University of Edinburgh's Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research, whose work uses techniques such as protein electrophoresis, and topics such as diabetes and fat digestion. Conversations like these are incredibly valuable in highlighting how to connect real biomedical research that takes place here at BioQuarter to science learning in the classroom. 🏫

Hands-on science is a powerful way to spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage more young people to consider careers in STEM. We're proud to support partnerships like this that connect education with real-world research and inspire the next generation of scientists. 👨‍🔬

Celebrating 10 years of our Summer Internship Programme!

Last week, a group of young people from four local schools completed internships across the Institute for Regeneration and Repair and The University of Edinburgh's Institute for Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research.

From gaining hands-on experience in research labs to exploring careers in clinical studies and medical imaging, the programme gave the interns a valuable insight into the many pathways available within science and healthcare.

The programme concluded with a celebration event, where each intern shared what they had learned with family, friends, mentors and colleagues.

Over the past ten years, this programme has grown from a single internship into an opportunity that has inspired local young people to explore STEM careers and ensure access to opportunities isn't defined by postcode.

A huge thank you to our interns, internship hosts, mentors and partners, including funding partners SSERC, for helping make this year's programme such a success. We can't wait to see what our interns do next! 🌟

This month, we’re shining a light on the The Anne Rowling Regenerative Neurology Clinic - a pioneering centre bringing together patients, researchers and clinicians to tackle some of the most challenging neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and Parkinson’s disease.

🧠 By combining world-leading research with patient-centred care, the clinic is helping drive discoveries that could lead to better treatments and improved quality of life for people living with neurodegenerative conditions.

Every blood donation can help up to three different patients in Scotland. Whether it’s supporting someone undergoing cancer treatment or major surgery, or helping patients recover from trauma or childbirth complications, your donation could make a life-changing difference.

Only around 2% of people who are eligible to donate blood currently do so, so every donation really counts.

🔬Another fantastic year of Science Buddies has come to an end.

This year, 24 amazing volunteers from across the BioQuarter community delivered 20 hands-on science sessions in five local primary schools, reaching more than 200 pupils.

From extracting DNA and using microscopes to creating lava lamps and exploring how the brain works, pupils had the opportunity to get stuck into science through fun, interactive activities. 🧪

Science Buddies is about so much more than experiments. Through regular visits, our volunteers became trusted mentors and role models, helping children build confidence, ask questions, and discover that science can be exciting, accessible and relevant to their lives.

The feedback from pupils and teachers has been incredible, with many children describing the sessions as "fun", "exciting" and asking when the Science Buddies will be back!

A huge thank you to every volunteer who gave their time, energy and enthusiasm this year. Programmes like Science Buddies help inspire curiosity, broaden horizons and nurture the scientists, researchers and innovators of tomorrow.

🩺 Supporting the next generation of healthcare professionals

As part of our Community Impact programme, we partnered with Liberton High School to support the delivery of its new National 5 Skills for Work: Health Sector course for S4 pupils.

Designed to give young people practical insight into careers in healthcare, the course combines hands-on learning with employability development. Our Community Impact team worked closely with the school to bring those opportunities to life.

Pupils visited the Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR) to take part in a mock interview experience for a Technical Support role. From checking in at reception to interviewing with a professional panel, the pupils impressed everyone involved with their confidence, preparation and thoughtful answers. 👏

The class returned to BioQuarter for sessions on medical devices and cardiovascular health, led by fifth-year medical students from Edinburgh Medical School as part of their SSC5 course. In the clinical skills lab, pupils learned CPR and explored medical devices in a real hospital environment — creating a brilliant two-way learning experience for both the school pupils and the medical students.

Programmes like this are so important in helping young people build confidence, develop employability skills and explore future careers in health and science. 🧬

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the programme such a success!
