PCOS to PMOS: What You Need to Know 💜
🩺 An important change designed to support diagnosis and treatment.
PCOS (Polycystic O***y Syndrome) is now being renamed PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome — following an international consensus led by the International PCOS Network alongside leading clinical, academic, and patient organisations.
The change aims to better reflect the true nature of the condition, which affects far more than just the ovaries.
For many women, PMOS can involve a combination of hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive symptoms, including:
• Irregular periods
• Acne or excess hair growth
• Weight changes or difficulty losing weight
• Fatigue
• Fertility challenges
• Insulin resistance
• Mood changes
The previous name, PCOS, was considered misleading, as not all women with the condition have ovarian cysts.
The updated name aims to:
✔️ Improve understanding of the condition
✔️ Support earlier and more accurate diagnosis
✔️ Reflect the wider hormonal and metabolic impact
✔️ Reduce stigma and confusion surrounding the condition
✔️ Support more personalised treatment approaches
