Surgical Robotics is a rapidly growing area in medical treatment, enabling superior outcomes and the ability to tackle procedures that might otherwise be unviable.

The aim of this webinar is to understand surgical robots through exploration of the Da Vinci robot, manufactured by Intuitive Surgical Inc. In addition, the challenges, solutions and benefits of surgical robots in three surgical specialities, urological, colorectal and thoracic, as well anaesthesia for these procedures will be presented and discussed.

After our presentations, there will be time for questions, comments and discussion as these specific examples may offer an insight into other procedures where surgical robots could be gainfully employed.

The Academy for Healthcare Science is pleased to announce that Dr Joy Tweed has been appointed Vice-Chair of the AHCS.

Joy has been a director of AHCS since 2022, previous to which she was a director at RCCP. She has had a longstanding interest in professional regulation and has been Chair of the Regulation Board since 2023.

Joy commented, 'I am delighted to have been appointed Vice-Chair of AHCS and look forward to working closely with Dean Fathers, as Chair. As a board, we're working on our strategic plan and I'm excited at the opportunities to promote and advance healthcare science, for the benefit of not only healthcare scientists but also most importantly for patients, and ensuring the highest standards and quality of care.'

The full Advancing Healthcare Awards shortlist for 2026 has been announced! The standard of entries this year was exceptionally high, and the shortlisted individuals and organisations reflect the breadth of talent and achievement across the NHS and beyond.

AHCS are proud to have sponsored an award at this year’s awards, ‘My inspiration: the award for the most inspiring leader’. We are delighted to share that the three shortlisted finalists for this award are:

🌟 Professor Catherine Ross, Chief Scientific Officer for Scotland, Scottish Government

🌟 Rachel Humphriss, Head of Audiology (Clinical Scientist), Oxford University Hospitals

🌟 Dr Sofia Michopoulou, Consultant Clinical Scientist and Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics, University Hospital Southampton
