During your diabetic eye screening, we use special dilating eye drops to temporarily make your pupils larger.

Think of your pupil like a window to the back of your eye; the wider it is, the more your clinician can see. By widening this window, the screening camera can take clear, high-resolution photographs of your entire retina.

This allows us to spot the earliest signs of diabetic retinopathy—changes to the small blood vessels that you wouldn't notice yourself—long before they affect your sight, so we can help protect your vision.

Good to know: The drops take about 15 to 20 minutes to work and will make your vision blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours. Because of this, you must not drive after your appointment, and it’s a great idea to bring a pair of sunglasses along to help with the glare!

Protect Your Vision: Know the Early Signs of Diabetic Retinopathy

If you have diabetes, your eye health is a top priority. Diabetic retinopathy can develop without obvious symptoms in its early stages, but knowing what to look for can make all the difference.

Review this infographic to recognize these key warning signs:

👁️ Blurred Vision: Trouble reading or focusing.
🌑 Floaters and Dark Spots: Specks or strings drifting in your field of vision.
⚫ Dark or Empty Spots: Patchy areas affecting your vision.
🌃 Poor Night Vision: Difficulty seeing in low light.

Early detection is crucial for preserving your sight. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, or if it’s time for your regular check-up, don't wait.

Schedule your diabetic eye screening today with the Norfolk and Waveney Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.
