NUH Life

NUH Life is a sperm donation centre for the East Midlands. Set up in the 1970s, Nottingham was one of the first sperm banks in the country.

Over the years, many NHS sperm banks have had to close due to uncertainties surrounding laws on donation and the struggle to find willing donors – but Nottingham has effectively maintained a small but successful sperm donation bank ever since. We’ve recently relocated to a brand new, purpose-designed facility on the QMC campus, now known as NUH Life. We’re not a commercial sperm bank and we don’t make any profit – any surplus income is fed straight back into NUH. We don’t just do sperm donation! We also do all initial male diagnostic testing for those trying to conceive, post-vasectomy follow-up, and we run the regional sperm storage facility for men undergoing sterilising cancer treatments. We’re a small team of professionals – which means anyone coming in will get to know us all pretty quickly. Our team is friendly, approachable and creates a welcoming environment for anyone visiting.

S***m Donation 101: Medical history and screening before you begin 👩‍⚕️

The screening process for donors is very thorough, as we need to make sure that we are not passing on any harmful diseases or conditions.

After an initial physical examination, you will need to undertake regular blood and urine tests (generally every 3-6 months). If you are severely needle-phobic, you may wish to reconsider being a s***m donor! If the tests show anything unexpected we will discuss that with you, and support you to get treatment and/or further investigations.

Your records are kept securely, and your identifying information is not shared with anyone outside our unit, other than to the governing body the HFEA.

S***m Donation 101: Is donating s***m uncomfortable or weird? 😬

We understand how it may feel to visit our unit for the first time – it’s nerve-racking! But we do all we can to make it as easy as possible. Staff are very professional (don’t forget – this is our day to day job and totally routine for us!).

We provide discrete and comfortable rooms to produce your samples in. Once men have completed their period of screening and start regularly donating samples, they do become more relaxed and find it easier… or just a little less weird!

S***m Donation 101: Let’s talk about anonymity and privacy 🕵️‍♂️

S***m donation is as private as you make it – people will generally only know that you are a s***m donor if you choose to tell them yourself!

Men visit our clinic for all sorts of reasons. In fact, very few of them are s***m donors. We are very discrete and do all we can to ensure your privacy is maintained whilst you are donating samples.

Your identifying details are only known to the laboratory staff, your records are kept securely and only a few key staff have access to them. You are given a unique non-identifying ‘donor code’ when you start donating – your name is not shared with anyone outside our unit, other than to the governing body, the HFEA.

However you must be aware that in the future, donor-conceived children do have a legal right to request your identifying details when they reach the age of 18.

Out of the millions of eligible men aged 18-45 in the East Midlands, only 3 became s***m donors with NUH Life last year. We need 10-15 to meet demand. The shortage is real… and the families are waiting.

It's easy to assume there are plenty of men already donating s***m. The reality is there aren't enough.

- There are over a million men who are the eligible age for s***m donation in the East Midlands.
- Last year, we only recruited 3 donors.
- We need at least 3x that amount annually to meet demand.

At the moment, there simply aren’t enough UK s***m donors – and that has a huge ripple effect. That's why families across the UK are waiting longer for treatment, and why every new donor makes such a difference.

If you've ever thought about donating, don't assume someone else will. One good thing really can change someone's future.
