Weight-loss injections such as GLP-1 agonists (including semaglutide and tirzepatide) are increasingly used — but they can affect how some oral medications are absorbed, including contraception and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
New guidance from the Faculty of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and British Menopause Society (BMS) highlights important steps to stay protected:
• Some oral contraceptives and HRT may be less effective
• Non-oral options are often recommended
• Extra precautions may be needed when starting or increasing doses
If you’re using weight-loss injections and take contraception or HRT, it’s important to review your options with a healthcare professional.
