This one trips up so many people. Your GP says 'take it on an empty stomach' and you assume you can't eat at all - so you end up starving for hours, or worse, skipping doses. Tan, our pharmacist at YHCP in Papatoetoe, sorts it out. Empty stomach simply means one hour before food or two hours after. You can absolutely still eat - just space it out. Tan also explains why this matters specifically for flucloxacillin. If you take it with food, the food actually absorbs the medication and makes it less effective. It's not dangerous - your antibiotic just won't work as well. So the timing rule isn't there to make life hard, it's there to make sure your meds do their job.

Has medication timing ever confused you? Ask us in the comments.

A lot of people quietly do this and don't realise the risk. You've been given sleeping tablets - say zopiclone - and you have a glass or two of wine in the evening, and yes, you sleep better. But Tan, our pharmacist at YHCP in Papatoetoe, explains why this is one of the combinations we worry about most. Alcohol on its own makes you drowsy. Zopiclone makes you drowsy. Put them together and the effect stacks - and in the worst case, it can make it very difficult to wake up. If sleep is the underlying problem, that's a conversation worth having with your GP - there are better long-term strategies than a sleeping tablet plus a drink.

Have you ever been unsure whether something was safe to take with your medication? Ask us in the comments.

New to New Zealand, or just switching GPs? Here's something most clinics don't explain. When you enrol at a new GP, government funding doesn't start straight away - it kicks in on the 1st of the following month. Until then, you pay the unsubsidised rate, which at most clinics is around $75 per visit. Esther, our manager at YHC Papatoetoe, walks through how our $75 off flyer waives that fee completely - your first visit becomes free. Eligibility: a two-year or more work visa, NZ permanent residency, or NZ citizenship. We're also registered with Work and Income, so WINZ payment cards are accepted.

Did anyone explain the funding gap to you when you first enrolled at a GP in NZ?

If a YHCP flyer landed in your letterbox recently, here's the deal. Mustafa, our manager at YHCP in Papatoetoe, explains. New patients get $75 off their first appointment - and the appointment itself is properly thorough. 30 minutes with the nurse to go through your history, medications and check your vital signs, then 15 minutes with the doctor. It's longer than a standard consult because we want to get to know you properly the first time around, not rush through. To get the $75 waived, just bring the flyer in, mention it when you call or tell us in person at reception. We know cost is one of the biggest reasons people put off enrolling with a new GP, so we wanted to take that off the table.

Has it ever happened that your child has woken up sick and the soonest GP appointment is two weeks away? For a lot of South Auckland families, that's the moment they realise they need to switch clinics. Mustafa, our practice manager at YHCP in Papatoetoe, sat down to explain why families enrol with us. Friendly reception staff who actually know your name. An experienced nursing team. Doctors who plan prevention for the whole family, not just react when something goes wrong. And critically - urgent slots are reserved every day for sick kids and unwell whanau. If we're full, we fit you in between patients. We're on Great South Road, very close to Manukau Mall, with plenty of patient-only parking on every side of the building.

How long do you usually wait for a GP appointment when your child is sick?
