The SCRS Site Solutions Summit ANZ was a fantastic opportunity to connect, collaborate, and share ideas with leaders from across the clinical research community.

We're especially proud of Esther Ji, who joined discussion exploring digital technologies and AI are shaping the future of clinical trials. We are happy to have supported Middlemore Hospital's (Health NZ - Counties Manukau ) contributions to the SNaPP trial (Sugammadex, Neostigmine, and Postoperative Pulmonary complications)- a large, international, multicentre randomised controlled trial involving researchers from The University of Melbourne and the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.

Results from the trial, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, help to fill an evidence-gap surrounding the effectiveness of the muscle relaxant reversal agent sugammadex.

The trial showed that in adults undergoing major surgery, sugammadex was associated with a small reduction in the incidence of postoperative lung complications compared with neostigmine.

The research team at Middlemore Hospital, led by investigator Dr Julian Dimech and coordinated by Samantha Ryan, recruited a quarter of the NZ participants, supporting the rapid completion of the trial and helping to advance evidence-based practice in anaesthesia and perioperative care.

Last Thursday, our teams from the Middlemore and Whangārei sites came together for our Development Day - a valuable opportunity to connect, reflect, and align on our shared vision for the future.

The day focused on the outcomes we’re working towards - both as an organisation and as individuals. It was inspiring to bring together diverse perspectives, strengthen cross-site connections, and explore how we can continue to grow and deliver meaningful impact through our work.

We were especially grateful to have Professor Richard Beasley, Director and Founder of Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (.ac.nz), join us as a guest speaker. His insights into the translation between clinical trials and public health were both engaging and thought-provoking, highlighting the important role research plays in improving real-world health outcomes.

We’re looking forward to building on the momentum and continuing to work together to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders.
